Hiking In Heels Hiking in Heels specializes in 1x1 sorority recruitment prep, customized for 70+ schools. Like SAT prep, but for sorority recruitment.

We want to help you have a successful sorority rush experience! Let's get you (or your daughter) a bid!! Participating in Greek life is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. However, sorority rush is competitive; every girl isn’t guaranteed a bid. Every year, lots of girls end up without one, and more often than not - they end up with ones they’re unhappy with. Just like for the SAT, you have to prep, because those who come prepared are in the best position to score higher. Luck favors the prepared; let's maximize your chances of getting a bid!

If you’re touring colleges this fall and already know you plan to rush, it’s time to start making those connections NOW! Here’s how to optimize your time on campus in a natural, not forced way before recruitment:
(PART 1!!)

1️⃣ Let friends and connections KNOW you’re coming!

Before you get to campus, reach out to friends in the chapters and any connections you have. Let them know you’re coming to tour, plan to rush, and would LOVE to meet for coffee! Friends, friends of friends, teammates, and older girls from school or camp are great places to start.

2️⃣ Read the Panhellenic website and follow their Instagram, but don’t stop there!!

Before you visit, do your research. Find out when recruitment happens, how big sorority life is, and whether there are official spring Panhellenic events for prospective students. OU has Greek Preview, Texas A&M has a Panhellenic preview event, and UT has Philofest, where PNMs can attend philanthropy events and meet sorority girls.

Don’t miss your school’s version just because you don’t know about it. Some events are listed ahead of time, but some aren’t. There may also be unofficial events depending on the school. Don’t assume nothing is happening because it’s not on the Panhellenic website! Ask around and talk to current students to get a feel for how things work.

3️⃣ Ask your school tour guide about Greek life!

If a tour guide or student ambassador mentions being in a sorority, ask about her experience. Ask what surprised her about rush or what she wishes she knew beforehand.

4️⃣ Look cute, but campus-appropriate.

Bring the cute athleisure, but pack a few outfits you’d be excited to wear for coffee, dinner, a sorority house tour, or anything else that might pop up. You never know what could come up last minute! Pack OPTIONS.

If you know sorority life may be a big part of college for you, don't wait until after you commit to learn how Greek life works on campus!

Five questions I'd ask while touring and comparing schools:

1️⃣ Does living in a sorority house matter to me? What's the housing setup?
Some campuses have multimillion dollar sorority mansions, others Greek villages or residential sorority dorms, and some no traditional sorority housing at all. If you picture living with your chapter, ask each school about chapter houses, shared rooms, sleeping porches, meal plans, bathrooms, and how many members live in (and what years). Those details make the chapter-house experience VERY different school to school. 💕

2️⃣ Would I feel comfortable here if I didn't go Greek?
At some schools, Greek life plays a huge role in the social scene. At others, it's one of many ways to find community. How important is that to you?

3️⃣ Do I want to pick my freshman roommate, or am I okay moving into the house right after bid day?
Some schools and chapters expect members to live in during a certain year, if not right after bid day. Would you rather choose your own roommate and housing, or does chapter living sound exciting?

4️⃣ What are the average dues/financial expectations for Greek life?
Check your school's Panhellenic website for dues, housing, meal plans, and other chapter costs. It's a financial commitment, so get the full picture before joining. It varies a TON by school and chapter, so if it matters to you, ask!

5️⃣ Do I want to rush in the fall or spring?
Some schools hold primary recruitment before classes start or early fall, others in the spring. Would you rather jump in right away or have a semester to settle in first? ✨

Greek life shouldn't be the only factor in your decision, but if it matters to you, it deserves to be part of the convo.

If sorority recruitment is even a possibility for you after high school, junior year is a great time to start thinking about what your social media says about you!!

You DON’T need to be an influencer, and you DON’T need to make your Instagram perfect, but I would avoid these 3 things:

1️⃣ Waiting until the summer before rush to clean everything up.
The girls just one or two grades ahead of you are making membership decisions when you go through recruitment. Your reputation doesn’t start during rush. Your social media is shaping it NOW. Go through your posts, tagged photos, captions, highlights, and even older accounts now. It’s SO much easier to make thoughtful changes over time than panic-archive half your profile a few weeks before recruitment. 💗

2️⃣ Posting things I already know I’ll probably delete later.
Before you post, ask yourself if you’d be comfortable with a future roommate, coach, employer, future boyfriend’s mom, or sorority President seeing it. There could already be sorority members already following you if you’ve shown interest in rushing!

3️⃣ Going ghost or disappearing from Instagram for months at a time.
Instagram, love it or hate it, is social proof.

By the time you graduate, there should be enough there to help the chapters get a feel for your personality and interests. So if you only have like 3 posts….time to get going!!

You don’t need to post constantly, but try to stay somewhat consistent. Sharing every so often helps people get a better sense of who you are, what you’re involved in, and what your life actually looks like. 💗✨
We can’t stress this enough: Junior year is early enough to start paying attention to your online presence! And by the time rush arrives, your social media will already feel fun and natural instead of “oh my gosh, did she just delete it all and start over?”

If sorority life is something you already know you want in college, it’s important to make that part of your school search! You still want to look at academics, location, cost, campus culture, and everything else that matters to you. But you can ALSO ask, “What does Greek life actually look like here?” 💗

If that sounds like you, here’s 10 schools (in no particular order) you might want to have on your radar:

1️⃣ University of Alabama
2️⃣ Ole Miss
3️⃣ SMU
4️⃣ University of Texas
5️⃣ University of Arkansas
6️⃣ University of South Carolina
7️⃣ University of Tennessee Knoxville
8️⃣ TCU
9️⃣ Auburn University
🔟 University of Georgia

These schools all have established fraternity and sorority communities, but recruitment can look VERY different from campus to campus. 👠

(It’s not at ALL limited to these schools. There are SO many to consider, and this is just a starting point!!)
When you’re researching schools, don’t stop at all the cute Bid Day pictures. Look at how many Panhellenic chapters are on campus, when primary recruitment happens, GPA expectations, Greek housing options, sorority dues, and how large a role Greek life plays in everyday campus life. Touring campus? Ask your tour guide if they’re Greek and hear more about her experience!

Also, pay attention to whether YOU like the school without the sorority piece. You’re choosing where you’ll live, study, make friends, and spend the next four years, so don’t overlook any other aspects of the school that matter to you just because there’s a giant Greek community. 💕

Every year, PNMs go into recruitment thinking they have a pretty good idea of what rush will be like. Then it starts, and a few things surprise them. Here’s four things we heard this season:

1️⃣ GPA mattered more than they expected.
Some girls assumed grades were just a small part of recruitment. But many chapters have academic standards, and GPA can affect which houses invite you back. Keeping your grades strong in high school really does matter! If you’re a senior right now, finish strong!! This applies to current freshmen about to rush in January too. 💗

2️⃣ Preparing early made a BIG difference.
The girls who started months ahead weren’t scrambling to fix a resume, find recommendation letters, clean up social media, or nervous about convos at the last minute. They had more time to feel ready and knew what to expect. ✨

3️⃣ Rankings weren’t everything.
Some PNMs went in convinced they knew which houses they wanted. Then they got there, met the girls, and were surprised by chapters where the conversations felt easiest and most genuine. A ranking can’t tell you how you’ll actually feel once you walk inside, and it’s SO important to base your decisions off YOUR personal interactions with the members themselves.

4️⃣ They made choices they didn’t expect.
Girls changed their minds during the week. They ranked houses differently than they thought they would and stayed open to chapters they barely knew before rush. Sometimes the house that surprised them ended up being the one they felt most excited about. 💕

If you go in prepared and ready, you’re going to feel more confident and excited because you know what’s going on behind the scenes and what actually matters...

To all the high school seniors going through rush next fall, this is for you! Sorority recruitment teams spend months building private top PNM lists and slideshows, and your social media presence is a huge part of that. If you’re planning to rush, the sororities will be looking at your social media this semester and next. Make sure to avoid these 7 common mistakes:

1️⃣ Leaving up inappropriate tagged pictures. So many girls forget to check this! Remove your tag from anything that doesn’t reflect the high-achieving student you are.

2️⃣ Only following some sorority accounts. Follow them all to stay updated and show an open mind!

3️⃣ Using bad language in captions or comments. Polished communication extends to your digital text, not just your photos. Make sure there is no profanity or anything controversial in the comments you make, not just the photos you post.

4️⃣ Not having your college in your bio. If you’ve already committed to your school, add this in. Make it easy for recruitment teams to find you by including your university and graduation year clearly!

5️⃣ Having an unclear profile picture. Use a clear, cute, updated photo of just you so members can memorize your face and name. No group photos or mirror selfies!

6️⃣ Posting opinions on any sororities or pre-rush events. Keep your journey private and professional! Avoid posting anything that could be seen as biased or leaked.

7️⃣ Keeping your account private. If they can't see you, they can't get excited about you! Set that account to public ASAP so sorority members can better get to know you!

If you’re a high school senior planning to rush next fall, do NOT wait until spring semester to start getting ready!

You definitely don’t need to have your rush outfits picked out or your recommendation letters lined up right now. But there are a few things you can do during senior year that will make your life SO much easier next spring and summer.

Here’s where to start:

1️⃣ Keep your resume updated.
Write down your leadership roles, clubs, jobs, volunteer work, awards, and activities while the details are still fresh. Trust us, trying to remember everything you did four years later is much harder!

2️⃣ Review your social media AND stay active on it.
Look through your Instagram, TikTok, tagged photos, bio, and older posts. Is every single post one you’d be proud of your sorority’s chapter president seeing?
Also, don’t disappear from social media senior year! Even before you commit to a school, current sorority members can and WILL start looking at your account, and some will start noticing what you post as early as fall semester of your senior year.

3️⃣ Learn how recruitment works at your future school.
Once you know where you’re attending, start learning the process. When does registration open? What materials will you need? Are recommendation letters common? Every school is different, and you do NOT want to discover a deadline two weeks before it happens.

4️⃣ Start thinking about rush outfits.
You don’t need to buy everything yet, but it’s helpful to learn the dress code and general vibe, think about what feels like you, and start saving ideas!

How early should you start getting ready for sorority recruitment? The short answer: ideally, sophomore or junior year of high school!

I know that sounds early, but hear us out! If you know recruitment is something you’re interested in, starting early gives you time to prepare without feeling rushed.

And no, we don’t mean outfits! Focus on the pieces that take time to build.

1️⃣ Sophomore year: Start paying attention to your involvement, leadership, service, grades, and activities. These can eventually become part of your recruitment resume and tell the story of who you are.

2️⃣ Junior year: Start getting more intentional. Keep track of your accomplishments, think about your resume, look at your social media, and learn how recruitment works.

3️⃣ Senior year: If you haven’t started yet, you are NOT too late! Start building your recruitment resume, editing your social media, learning about recommendation letters, and researching recruitment at your colleges.

4️⃣ Spring and summer before college: You want to be refining, not starting from scratch. Finalize your materials, prep for conversations, plan outfits, stay on top of deadlines, and know what your school requires.

The biggest mistake we see is girls waiting until a few months before recruitment and trying to figure EVERYTHING out at once. Do a little at a time so that when recruitment gets here, you feel prepared instead of panicked.

So if you’re a sophomore or junior thinking, “Isn’t it way too early?” It’s really not! 💕 Starting now means you can prepare little by little instead of figuring out your entire strategy a few weeks before rush.
