Kathy Clifford & Associates, Success Coach, Seattle Washington Kathy is widely known as a corporate team specialist and executive coach. Hi, I'm Kathy Clifford.

Her company, KC&A delivers learning and development solutions for leaders, managers, and teams focused on some of the world's biggest and most complex challenges. My "best day" work is when I help people have simple breakthroughs to more meaningful visions for their life using their most powerful self-expression. My zone of brilliance is guiding people to the clarity and confidence necessary to at

tain that personally defined success - in work and in life. In the first year of launching my business, I started with one client and hopes of replacing my paycheck income working 50-60 hours per week. I ended year one with three substantial recurring clients, two strategic alliances, and I doubled that paycheck income working 30-35 hours per week. I have worked with some of the most gifted individuals and market-leading organizations in the world, showing them how to leverage common practices to achieve uncommon results. With an insatiable appetite for learning and for improving upon what already exists, I question everything and look for the intersections of knowledge and experience that create powerful and meaningful outcomes.

What’s the key to building trust in teams? It starts from within.

One of the most consistent challenges I hear from teams and leaders is the lack of psychological safety in the workplace. People hesitate to speak up, share ideas, or fully engage because they don’t feel safe to do so.

And while we often assume that creating a culture of trust is someone else’s responsibility (whether it’s leadership, HR, or "the other person") the truth is, team relationships are an inside job.

We can’t control others, but we can control how we show up. We can examine our own beliefs, assumptions, and communication styles to foster connection rather than division.

What’s one thing you do to create trust and safety on your team?

Drop your thoughts below. I’d love to hear what’s working for you!

✨ Exercise: Embracing Non-Doing ✨

As high achievers, it can feel almost impossible to slow down. We often label slowing down as “laziness,” triggering a negative spiral of thoughts and feelings.

But what if we reframed it? What if we saw it as non-doing - a powerful practice that replenishes our energy and enhances our creativity?

Exercise: Reflect & Plan Your Non-Doing

1. Reflect on the Last 72 Hours:
✏️When have you experienced periods of non-activity?
✏️What were you focusing on during those moments?
✏️How did you feel—physically and emotionally?
✏️What impact did it have on your energy?

2. Plan for the Next 72 Hours:
📌Intentionally schedule moments of non-doing (e.g., a walk, journaling, meditation, or simply sitting in silence).
📌How do these moments affect your energy and creativity?
📌What shifts do you notice in your relationships and presence?
📌Watch out for the critical voices and gently set them aside to embrace stillness.

By nurturing these non-doing moments, you’ll be surprised at how much more powerful your doing becomes!

🌿 Share your experience of non-doing with us! Let’s support each other on this journey to greater mindfulness and energy.

As an avid “do-er”, Type A, Driver, Achiever, or whatever label you want to use, stopping on a dime can be been both excruciating and liberating at the same time.

Stopping or even slowing down feels like laziness to me. And laziness is something that I struggle to be with in myself and in others.

And as I label it “laziness” or feel “lazy”, a spiral of negative thoughts or feelings often follow.

Distraction is the fastest path out of the spiral. Enter food, weeding, laundry, more weeding, long phone calls, Facebook, surfing, even an occasional nap.

Then one morning, I was attempting to meditate (i.e. chase thoughts, catch myself, breathe, center, rinse and repeat), and the reflection suggested an alternative perspective on laziness.

Instead, it described a state of “Non-Doing”. When you are in a state of non-doing, the flavor is positive.

When I am consciously or intentionally “non-doing”, I am full of energy, even over-flowing sometimes. I feel radiant, bubbling with creativity, vibrating with possibility. Not sleepy but tremendously alive and perfectly aware.

For me, non-doing doesn’t mean non-moving, though it can. I can be walking, or gardening, or listening, or lounging in bed, or playing a board game and be in a state of non-doing.

It’s about the mindset, my presence, my inner state of calm, faith, trust, acceptance. The opportunities for growth and self-awareness often come up through times of “darkness” or struggle.

Our resiliency muscles are finely honed through times of big change and transition, If we can remain open and willing to go for the ride.

✨Skills for Forgiving Self✨

Think about what I would say to my best friend in this situation. Give that to myself. Remember that we all carry heavy loads in life, and we all need to be met with kindness.

What is one thing I can do, in this moment, to be kind to myself?

1⃣ Reflect on my intentions and give them more weight than results. My intentions rarely need forgiveness.

2⃣ Step back to a more emotionally detached view, and practice developing faith by remembering that my path is filled with “evidence not seen”. I don’t know what I don’t know.

3⃣ Remember all the silver linings of life that I couldn’t recognize as they were occurring and trust they are happening now too.

4⃣ Lighten up! Treat myself with the levity and tolerance I would give a puppy or small child.

These are but a few skills that can foster forgiveness of myself and in turn “right-size” my expectations.

✨Skills for Forgiving Others✨

Without practicing the skills of self-forgiveness, it is difficult to practice the skills of forgiving others. This can be even more difficult, especially when personal beliefs or values are challenged. However, it is through forgiveness of others that our own hearts and souls are freed. I must forgive others to release resentment and experience peace.

Here are a few skill ideas to help shift forgiveness from an event into a practice:

📌Be kind because most everyone you meet is carrying a heavy load.
📌Be curious about the intentions of the other and seek the positive possibilities.
📌Practice self-awareness and notice when your personal values are triggered. If so, your perspective may be skewed. (Are you clear of your core personal values?)
📌Do not make assumptions, especially about the intentions of the other. You will most often be wrong.
📌Remember that “words are spoken by the listener”. How are you listening?
📌Choose to assume positive intent or seek the most respectful interpretation as a path to open-heartedness. Forgiveness requires an open heart.

✨Forgiving in the Workplace✨

The skills of forgiveness are equally important in our workplace. In my experience working with teams and leaders over the last 15+ years, most breakdowns in collegial and team relationships are the result of

A )Reacting (sometimes automatically/unconsciously) to people’s communication or workstyles
B) Incorrect assumptions or interpretations of others’ words, expressions, or actions

These breakdowns often manifest as disappointment, judgment or resentment of the other. Most of the time, the skills of forgiveness are lacking as we collectively focus more of our learning and attention on intellectual and “practical” development. The connection, trust, and psychological safety that emerge through forgiveness practice cannot be measured. And it is a gift to witness and experience.

In addition to the challenges of our workplace relationships, a large percentage of the individual professionals that I coach suffer from their own version of Imposter Syndrome. The unfolding of this struggle usually reveals a need for self-forgiveness and the skills listed above are a great place to start.

At the end of the day, most of us just want to feel at peace with ourselves, our lives and the world. While we can’t control a lot of it, we can choose to practice forgiveness as a skill and the practice in itself is success.
