Compost is great for your garden, but it can also be a pretty great place for rodents.

That doesn't mean you need to get rid of your compost, but if you're seeing rodents nearby, it's worth taking a closer look at where your compost or manure is located and what's happening around it.

Not every hole in your yard is made by the same animal. Knowing what you're looking at can help you decide whether it's time to take action.

🐀 Rat Burrows
• About 2–4 inches wide
• Usually found near foundations, sheds, woodpiles, compost bins, or dense vegetation
• Often have smooth, well-traveled paths leading to and from the entrance

🐿️ Chipmunk Burrows
• Small, neat openings (about 2 inches)
• Little or no soil piled outside
• Common near gardens, stone walls, and patios

🦫 Mole Tunnels
• Raised ridges or mounds running across the lawn
• Feed on insects, not your garden plants

🐭 Vole Runways
• Narrow surface trails through grass
• Small burrow openings hidden beneath vegetation

Yes, yes they can.

Most people are surprised by just how small an opening a rat needs to get inside.

Norway rats can squeeze through openings about the size of a quarter, while roof rats can fit through even smaller gaps. That means loose vents, damaged door sweeps, utility openings, and foundation gaps can become entry points.
