💳 Let’s clear up some confusion about debit cards, PIN debit, and “running it as credit.”
There seems to be a common misunderstanding that if a customer uses a debit card and selects “credit” instead of entering a PIN, the transaction somehow becomes a credit card transaction.
It does not.
A debit/check card that is connected to a bank account is still a debit card, regardless of whether the transaction is processed using a PIN or through the signature/credit option.
👉 PIN debit = still a debit card
👉 Signature debit / “run as credit” = still a debit card
👉 Selecting “credit” does not turn your debit card into a credit card.
This distinction is especially important for Louisiana businesses when it comes to surcharging. Debit and prepaid card transactions cannot be assessed a credit card surcharge simply because the customer selected “credit” at checkout.
