Students for Stripes

Students for Stripes We are committed to the continuation of LSU's popular freshman transition program. It's time administration prioritizes the student body again.

Office of Enrollment Management has grown silent on the 2020 program's progress, ignoring student voices.

“STRIPES was so important in shaping my experience at LSU. As an out-of-state student, I was worried about not knowing the LSU traditions and having the connections on campus. STRIPES showed me the magic underneath these stately oaks and broad magnolias. It brought me the connections that I will cherish for a lifetime.
When I left my home in Texas in early August a year and a half ago for STRIPES, I felt like an outsider at LSU. After just a few days at STRIPES, I felt like I belonged, and I knew that I made the right decision to be a Tiger.
It’s past time that LSU’s administration listens to the powerful voices of student leaders on campus. Student leaders like the ones that staffed STRIPES have played the most crucial roles in my success and retention at LSU, and I know that I am not alone in this trend. The tools that STRIPES empowers students with make a huge mark in the magnificence that is a trademark at LSU.” - Kaylee Valencia

“Being from Texas, I didn’t have anyone in my family who had gone to LSU or were even interested when I started applying. I had gone to SPIN (Spring Invitational) and many Ambassadors recommended for me to go to STRIPES, and I could never be more grateful!
When I got off the bus and came to STRIPES by myself with only a suitcase and an Uber Driver, I felt scared and isolated until I stepped into Spruce Hall where I was greeted by many smiling faces (including William Hayes who ate dinner with me because I came in late). Once I had met my SGLs and other STRIPErs, I felt at home because Maggie (my SGL) said we had to rip up our cool cards and start fresh!
Through the many late nights of winning tug-of-war, sharing secrets under the veil of a flashlight, eating at the 459 and 5 and learning what we do and don’t like there, I made a few lasting friendships. Once the veil of STRIPES had finished, I had people I could lean on in the first weeks of school while I was still getting my feet wet at LSU. I met my best friends through the after effect over STRIPES. (We both did STRIPES and would make references but only people from STRIPES understood them.) When I would feel antsy about something I was able to call my SGLs to find the answer.
If I had not gone to STRIPES, I wouldn’t have had this foundation of LSU traditions, friends, resources, or mentors! FOREVER THANKFUL FOR TUREAUD... YOU KNOW!” - Angel Puder

“Where do I even start? My participant year was an experience like no other. I made some of my closest friends in 2017 as a participant and they were part of the reason why I still stayed at LSU. My freshman year was hard since I didn’t have many friends, but I knew I could rely on my STRIPES small group through anything.
In 2018, I got on staff and experienced STRIPES in a different way as a small group leader and had even more fun having the opportunity to impact incoming students. I made some of my closest friends that are still with me today.
In 2019, I once again got the opportunity last-minute to be a program assistant with my best friends again. Each year I learned something different about myself and LSU, but one thing that was constant was my love for the LSU community and for STRIPES.
This program has given me so much love and support for the growth of my character. I will never be able to give enough back to STRIPES. Once again, I would not currently still be at LSU had it not been for STRIPES. STRIPES as we all know it now must be sustained. STRIPES must be continued and have the impactful qualities that it always has. Without it, LSU would not be what it is today. Love to all my STRIPES people and Geaux Tigers!” - Gabe Breaux

“I’m an out of state student from Alabama. A state which doesn’t send a lot of kids to LSU. I knew absolutely nobody else going to LSU or anyone that was at LSU. In fact, I had only ever been to campus twice before STRIPES.
Though I tried not to show it, I was terrified that I wouldn’t make friends. STRIPES made it clear that I had nothing to be scared of. Right off the bat, It gave me my first friends at LSU. It gave me someone go walk to Cane’s with at midnight, someone that hugs me every time he sees me, someone to try boba for the first time with, and the best 8 person secret all-nighter ever.
In addition to the friendships, STRIPES taught me all the tricks to navigating campus and all the traditions LSU holds. It made me fall in love with a school that wasn’t my first choice.
At the end of the day, STRIPES is a program that does nothing but benefit its newest, most scared, most unfamiliar students. I can say without a doubt that I would not be the student I am now without this program!” - Lizzie Shaw

“STRIPES helped me learn that it’s okay to be yourself. Be as outgoing as you want to be, and if you’re not like that, then that’s fine too. I made many friendships that I never thought I would have. STRIPES was an amazing experience, and I would definitely do it all over again in a heartbeat!” - Gabs

“STRIPES was the base foundation for everything I have and have accomplished thus far in my college career. My small group became my friend group, and my SGLs became the mentors I look up to every day. Nothing else at LSU has changed me the way STRIPES did in just four days. I found my confidence to go out of my comfort zone, my interest in trying new things, and my desire to meet new people who may be completely the same or completely different than me. STRIPES opened my eyes to all the things LSU has to offer and pushed me to take advantage of it. I could never imagine my first year at LSU without STRIPES, and I hope that these new incoming Tigers will get to experience the same things.” - Kennedy Martin

“STRIPES gave me a footing on campus. I learned where my classes were and how to navigate the campus in a more personal environment. I also made friends (especially through the “campfire” tradition) who made my first few weeks on campus bearable while trying to acclimate to a new environment. I know I always, always have a solid group of people I can call on if I need help.” - Erin Leblanc

“STRIPES showed me what being a part of LSU is really about! I applied to be on the 2019 STRIPES staff not really knowing what I was getting into. I came out of it with new friends that I can call my family and a true understanding of what the word diversity means. People from different backgrounds and cultures became best friends. Being a part of this truly changed me for the better!” - Sam Rhodes

“When moving to Baton Rouge from Southern Illinois in the fall of 2016, I knew no one on this campus. However, after those four days it was clear that I had found my new home.
My experience as a participant was something I will truly never forget. I credit everything I have at LSU to this program. The many friendships that I still maintain to this day, and the confidence gained to be able to make it at a school 602 miles from home are only two of the many wonderful experiences this program has afforded me.
I was also fortunate enough to give back to the program, serving on staff during STRIPES17 and STRIPES19. Being on staff, you can see just how much this program means to the incoming students. This program truly changes lives, mine included, and has made me the Tiger I am today.
So to those in charge, please, hear our stories. Listen to our testimonies. Simply stated, this program works, and is one of the keys to success for so many future Tigers to come. I may be graduating in a couple weeks, but I can't watch STRIPES leave with me. So please, do the right thing and !” - Dominic Nation

“The summer of 2018 was one of the best I've ever had and it's all thanks to a program I decided to apply for on a whim.
I found myself having internal struggles about where I belonged on campus and where I could make a long-lasting impact. I figured it wouldn't hurt to step out of my comfort zone and apply for something new. What did I have to lose?
Everyone I looked up to couldn't stop talking about how amazing their STRIPES experience was as a participant and especially on staff.
As someone who had never gone through the program, I felt a little out of place applying, but I thought that it would be a great way to venture out and learn more about LSU.
That curious sophomore who applied for that position is now a strong and confident senior who can't seem to thank that 2018 summer enough. Deciding to apply for STRIPES was hands down the BEST decision I've made coming to LSU.
Only one summer with this program and I have never felt so loved, appreciated, and supported. I was celebrated for being me and the program reignited my love and passion for LSU. I have formed many new friendships and strengthened existing ones over the course of those 3 weeks.
I got to share my story with all of my fellow tigers and I could not be more grateful for the opportunities STRIPES gave me afterward.
I think the one thing I am the most thankful for was the connections I made with SOOOO MANY amazing freshmen who are on campus today doing great things (AS EXPECTED). They have become some of my greatest friends and I've learned so much from them. I am so proud of all of the students I got to meet that summer and it truly warms my heart hearing their stories about and that I got to be a part of that experience.
This program will always have a special place in my heart and I am honored to have been able to experience STRIPES. It has changed my life forever.” - Jenn Nguyen
