NEUROPATHY and R-ALPHA LIPOIC ACID:

R-Alpha Lipoic Acid [or R-ALA]is the natural, biologically active form of alpha-lipoic acid produced in the human body, serving as a powerful mitochondrial coenzyme and antioxidant. It is superior to standard racemic ALA [a mix of R- and S-forms] due to better absorption, higher bioavailability, and direct involvement in energy metabolism and free radical neutralization.

Key Benefits and Uses:

[1] Antioxidant Support: Acts as a "universal antioxidant," which is both water- and fat-soluble, allowing it to work throughout the body and cross the blood-brain barrier.

[2] Energy Metabolism: Crucial for mitochondrial function and converting calories into energy, which may aid in healthy aging and athletic performance.

[3] Diabetic Neuropathy: Often used to manage diabetic nerve pain, improving insulin sensitivity and reducing symptoms of neuropathy.

[4] Stabilized Forms: While R-ALA is naturally unstable, sodium-stabilized R-lipoic acid (Na-RALA) has much higher bioavailability.

[5] Dosage and Considerations:

[i] Recommended Dose: Generally 150–300 mg/day for Na-RALA, or up to 600–1800 mg/day for standard racemic ALA.

[ii] Best Time to Take: For optimal absorption, it is best taken on an empty stomach.

[iii] Side Effects: Generally safe, though high doses can cause nausea or vomiting.

NOTE:
It is recommended to check vitamin B1 levels as ALA may impact its stores.

R-ALA vs. S-ALA:

R-ALA (Natural): Biologically active and better absorbed.

S-ALA (Synthetic): Produced chemically; lower activity and may inhibit the absorption of the R-form.

Most "Alpha Lipoic Acid" supplements are a 50/50 mix (R & S), while "R-Alpha Lipoic Acid" is the purer, more potent form.

Alpha-Lipoic Acid: Biological Mechanisms and Health Benefits In nature, ALA is found only in the R form and is present in the body both in free form and conjugated to conserved lysine residues in an amide bond.
