Will you take the pledge to have a family/friends dinner this Sunday, October 16 in honor of World Food Day and the Slow Food $5 challenge? I took the pledge and although all we are doing is having a family meal, I will make sure I talk to my children about where our food comes from and how we can make the food system more sustainable and fair. Then get down to enjoying a delicious, healthy, non-processed and cheap meal! I plan on going beyond the $5 challenge myself, serving lemon-thyme roasted chicken with pan jus, crispy roasted new potatoes and acorn squash with a maple glaze. Dessert will be a whole-wheat apple-cranberry Crostata with homemade vanilla ice cream the kids will help make. Enjoy your family, friends and food, bring life to your table :)

Come and enjoy! If you can't make it, I encourage you to host your own $5 challenge (not hard at all....I make less than $3 a serving meals all the time!) but let everyone know that "Slow food shouldn't cost more than fast (junk) food". Cheers!

ABOUT THE $5 CHALLENGEYou're invited to help take back the 'value meal' by getting together with family, friends and neighbors for a slow food meal that costs no more than $5 per person. Some simple, hard truths in here..."Taking the long route to putting food on the table may not be easy, but for almost all Americans it remains a choice, and if you can drive to McDonald’s you can drive to Safeway. It’s cooking that’s the real challenge. (The real challenge is not “I’m too busy to cook.” In 2010 the average American, regardless of weekly earnings, watched no less than an hour and a half of television per day. The time is there.) "

It’s a myth that chips are cheaper than broccoli. They’re not. So what’s stopping people from eating more healthfully?

Good morning! I came across a fantastic challenge this morning....The October Unprocessed Challenge. What a great way to get people inspired to cut out processed foods! The food I prepare has no processed ingredients....I don't think we need them! Nothing tastes better than natural, whole foods. Spices, garlic, herbs add all of the flavor we need, PLUS nutrition and my recipes are quick and convenient as well! Check out the link above and take the challenge! For those of you who would love to cut out processed foods but don't have the time to cook for themselves, Chef On The Run Personal Chef Service can provide you/your family with delicious, homemade food prepared especially for your palate! Check out www.ChefOnTheRunForYou.com for more information! Cheers!

It may be impossible to get a consensus on the healthiest diet — vegetarian? Paleo? gluten-free? — but one thing we can all agree on is this: eating fewer commercially processed foods is good for you. That's why we are glad to see the October Unprocessed challenge return for a second year. Could you...
