This summer felt different, and I think I know why.

I made sure to be very intentional about making room for both work AND life. Not only did I carve out time for travel, but on the home front I tackled yard projects, puzzles, and endless supervising of Orange and Jobless (if you’ve seen my stories, you know exactly what I’m talking about 🐈👀). And in between all those personal passion projects, I dove deep into work that I couldn’t love more!

And for once, I don’t feel like I’m getting to the end of summer wondering where it all went.

I worked hard.
I traveled abroad.
I rested when possible.
I spent time with people I love.
And I actually let myself enjoy all of it. 🩵

Meanwhile, the summer was FULL at The Orderly Space. Our team was moving families, unpacking homes, traveling together, dialing in procedures, and organizing all kinds of spaces!

As we head into September and all the routines that come with fall, I’m feeling really grateful for the summer we had... and VERY ready for what’s next (you know I love getting back into a routine 😉).

🔥 HOT TAKE: You’re not being financially responsible by keeping something you regret buying.

And I say that as someone who has absolutely stood in my own closet, holding something I haven’t worn in years, thinking, “But I spent SO much money on this.” 😅

The thought of donating it feels like admitting I made a bad decision. Like if I just keep it a little longer, maybe I’ll eventually wear it enough to justify what I spent.

But that’s not how it works... the money was gone the day I bought it.

Keeping that $200 dress shoved in the back of my closet for another five years isn’t going to put $200 back in my pocket. It’s just taking up space while making me feel guilty every time I see it.

So I hate to break it to you, but you’re not saving yourself money by keeping things you don’t use, need, or even really like. You’re actually paying for them twice: once with your money, and again with the space they continue to take up in your home.

The purchase already happened. You learned from it. You don’t have to store the “mistake” forever. 🩵 Give yourself permission to let it go!

Fun Fact: We’ve had more moving projects than garage overhauls on our calendar this year, so last week I called the whole Orderly Space team together for a full day moving workshop to review the entire process from start to finish! 📦🙌🏼

Not only did we brush up on our packing techniques, but we also reviewed our moving procedures, and (my favorite part!) swapped all the little tips and tricks everyone has picked up on projects over the years.

There’s always someone who has figured out a better way to wrap something tricky or a small change that makes the whole process go smoother. And I swear every team workshop has at least one “Wait... that’s genius. Why haven’t I been doing that?!” moment.

When a client trusts us to pack up their home, we’re handling everything from their everyday dishes to the things they’ve had for decades. There are SO many details involved, and getting together like this helps us make sure every project gets the same level of care from our team. 🩵

Then, of course, it was right back to putting those skills to work! Between moves and our regular organizing projects, we had another busy week with plenty of transformations to show for it!

Let me be the one to say it…

You don’t need as much as you think you do. Most of us aren’t struggling because we’re disorganized - we’re just managing way more than we actually use.

This is coming from someone who has built a career around creating calm, functional spaces. I thrive on systems. I love knowing exactly where something lives. I’ve always been the organized one in my family.

But even I’ve stood in my own home and thought… why am I maintaining all of this?!

The extra mugs I never reached for.
The skincare products I “might try again.”
The pretty jars I was absolutely going to repurpose someday. 🙃

After helping hundreds of families simplify their homes, I’ve learned that it’s usually not the big messes that wear you down.
It’s the constant management of the extra things you don’t need.

So in case you’ve been feeling that subtle pull toward “less” - the urge to clear out a closet, empty a drawer, breathe a little easier - let this be your permission.

You’re allowed to keep what you use and release the rest.
You’re allowed to live simply. 🤍

I came home from three weeks away, and the first thing I did was reset our garage! 🤷🏼‍♀️😅

Within about 24 hours, I had Lucas out there with me going through old sports equipment, I was condensing bins, and I finally tackled our emergency food supplies that had gotten a little out of hand.

Apparently this is how a Professional Organizer settles back into real life. 😂

But it reminded me of something I tell our clients all the time:
→ Your home isn’t meant to be organized once and stay that way forever.

Kids grow out of sports. You use things up. New things come into the house. Routines change. And every once in a while, you have to look around and ask, “Does this still make sense for us to keep?”

Even my own organizing systems need a reset sometimes!

And that’s what I love about these before & afters from last week. Every one of them is a little snapshot of a family deciding it was time to make their space work better for the way they’re living RIGHT NOW. 🙌🏼
