Ten years of The Co-Write!

169 episodes.

A whole lot of Texas/Red Dirt.

A surprising amount of Rock & Roll Hall of Fame talk.

And somehow John Baumann became our most frequent guest.

What started in 2016 as Bobby and Donovan sitting around talking music has turned into a decade of records, festivals, songwriters, tangents, history and more than a few arguments.

The best part is that somewhere along the way, the show stopped just documenting the Texas Music scene and became a small part of its history too.

Here’s to ten years of The Co-Write…and whatever comes next!

We are celebrating with a live podcast today at Finn MacCool’s in Fort Worth. 2pm.

Some shows announce themselves as history while you’re standing in the room.

This one didn’t.

It wasn’t sold out. It was barely advertised. I only knew it was happening because I happened to catch 92.1 KNBT at the right moment. A relic of that early internet era when you could still just stumble onto something.

A Thursday night at Gruene Hall in October 2001. Merle Haggard on that tiny, historic stage. What seems like a 12 piece band in my memory.

Red Volkaert on guitar. Bonnie Owens singing harmony. Merle playing seemingly every instrument within reach. He was funny, loose and vibrant.

The non capacity crowd knew we were in the midst of something special. A cold front had blown through that afternoon and made the Hall feel perfect.

When people ask me the best show I’ve ever seen, my answer usually comes down to two: the Allman Brothers in Dallas in 2009 and this one. I wrote about them both in Still Here.

A $39 ticket. A room that wasn’t full. One of the greatest American songwriters who ever lived a few feet away.

At the time, it was just a great night.

25 years later, it feels a little more sacred.

This Sunday Funday isn’t a No Limit production…but we’re going to do our best.

Shoutout to Derek Dodd for the amazing AI flyer. We will lean into a bit.

Someone sent us this amazing photo of Leon Russell. That’s about as cool as it gets. All the way around.

For the past couple of years, Johnny Blue Skies has been covering the 80’s classic “Party All the Time” originally brought to us by Rick James and Eddie Murphy.

It’s awesome each time. There’s even a studio version. Sturgill remains one of one.

Under the covers.
