Panerai has a tried and true formula in the 44mm luminor series. So I’m not surprised they stick with it all these years later.

I have always given Panerai credit for their material science and engineering. That’s how they can breathe new life into a model they’ve been making forever. In this case they turned the bezel and crown into a carbotech ring and more importantly the case is sintered titanium. Basically think of titanium dust molded into a shape. This gives the a watch a matte yet textured finish. But it’s all metal.

This is the Panerai for the guy who has been there, done that with the brand or a new collector looking to standout with something different.

The new Polaris models from Jaeger LeCoultre have kept JLC top of mind lately. I never really cared for the Polaris models as JLC has many other exciting models that is until these new dials and design language of the modern Polaris.

It’s so different from everything else out there. It’s a diver, but the rehaut rotates not the bezel. The sapphire crystal bubbles over the dial and bezel. It’s very cool and unique. JLC is famous for being your watchmaker’s favorite watch. The movements are always the focus but it looks like the face of the Polaris finally matches too. The longer you look at the dial the more you see.

A very appropriate name for that textured dial.They now make many variations in many colors but all of them originate from here.
This is the watch that gave Grand Seiko its modern look and led to a windfall of success for the brand. I believe both history and collectors will remember this Grand Seiko snowflake as the one that really created the modern identity for the brand.

This Panerai 1662 “TuttoGrigio” has a muted grey dial with a ceramic bezel paired with…a 3D printed sandblasted titanium case?

Of course it’s packaged with the tried and true 44mm case.

One thing I have to give panerai credit for is just like Porsche they continue to be able to reinvent their iconic designs and products in new ways that keep the brand exciting. You won’t always get it right, but this one is a hit for me.

This is the ONLY Ulysse Nardin Maxi Marine Chronograph Silver dial available in the US as a complete set including the strap change tool. It just underwent a $1000 complete overhaul as well so it’s running perfectly and under warranty for 18 months so there will be no surprises. Original MSRP was $10400 which is $16500 in today’s dollars.

Sometimes the aquanaut or nautilus aren’t appropriate, that’s where the annual calendar steps in and differentiates by showing off Pateks mastery of complications. Day, Date, and month, accurate until the next leap year and can be rapidly adjusted. Pro tip: Leave the fly back chronograph running if you really miss having a seconds hand.

I think the big appeal is how much is hiding in plain sight. Take a look:

The classic Breitling Navitimer World 46mm
This one is a 2018 white dial with a brand new blue leather strap. Just returned from polishing and service. I don’t think there’s another white dial with blue crocodile leather strap option out there currently

The navitimer world was one of my first watches ever (black dial) so this has a special place in my heart. A must have for pilots and engineers for its famous “slide rule” function with the bezel to make calculations. How many watches out there are calculators?

This is the Green Dial Panerai 997.
This piece is the newer generation Radiomir which have a much better looking crown and overall have moved away from the dress watch shape they used to have. This one in particular is very robust, very “military.” That’s not unusual for Panerai as their roots are making military watches during WW2 after all. It’s a hardy 48mm full ceramic case with a domed thick crystal, and a textured green sandwich lume dial.

It’s not for everyone but for the right guy it’s something like nothing else out there. I chose to pair it with an aftermarket textile strap as opposed to the original camo panerai strap. This is a complete set from 2019.
