The Arcane Texas Fact of the Day:
There is a community in Texas called Elbow, Texas. It's about 6-7 miles south of Big Spring in Howard County. The current population is 10. What's interesting is that I can find virtually NO information on Elbow. It's apparently so small that not even the Texas State Historical Association acknowledges it, the book "Texas Towns: From Abner to Zipperlandville" fails to mention it, and "Little Towns of Texas," an authoritative (and rare) 1982 reference book that SHOULD have it, skips from Egypt to El Campo. The only reference to it that I can find is in the Texas Almanac AND, strangely enough, Google Maps, which knows where Elbow is. There appears to have been a fine schoolhouse in Elbow (see photo) but as to where the community got its name, or how, or why .... 'tis a mystery. Maybe the folks in Elbow prefer it that way. Maybe they'd just as soon people don't find out about their community, what with all the hullaballoo and rigamarole that would probably ensue. But I see you, Elbow. You don't escape MY notice. And I acknowledge you, even if nobody else will. 😉
Seriously, folks. I'd love to know the story, so if anybody knows, please edify the rest of us. I may even drive out there one day, see if I can find a hearty Elbownian, and ask what the deal is.
