Professional advice, but make it personal:
Before I became a comms queen, I was a TV news personality. šŗš¤ At my core, I will always be a journalist. If you had told this hungry up-and-coming reporter that I would spend just a few years in the industry, I wouldnāt have believed you. But that was before them.
I loved news - but I love my family so much more. I canāt stress this advice enough for young people who are considering their career path: choose the gig that works for your family. And even if you arenāt there yet, consider the family you hope to have one day.
I chose to reserve my evenings, weekends and holidays for my kids. I chose a flexible schedule that allows me to catch a school concert, or volunteer at a field day. I chose stability rather than two-year contracts. I chose being the first and last person they see every single day. I havenāt questioned those choices once.
We used to joke about people āselling outā when they left TV news for PR. I may have sold out, but I think I got a pretty sweet deal.ā¤ļø
