Zero wake-ups? The answer is Yes & No.
YES: We all wake in the night-me, my husband, and my son. We reposition and get comfortable. Waking up is natural biology, but the skill of falling back asleep is the most essential part of healthy sleep. Since we all “surface” between cycles, all we really need are the skills to settle ourselves back into sleep.
NO: For us, full wakes of alertness, crying, or the need for me/ hubby to step in and settle him back down just don’t happen. From the start, he’s known how to transition between cycles on his own. Even if he stirs, he doesn’t feel lost. He doesn’t wait for a “fix.” He has the confidence to recognize a brief wake-up for what it is and has the ability to drift right back into sleep effortlessly.
🪄 The secret? It isn’t stopping the wake-ups; it’s ensuring your child has the skills to navigate them. When they can reposition and settle themselves, those stirrings stay short. It’s no big deal to them because they know exactly what to do.
🪄 When we let our children lead the way at bedtime, it’s usually because we’re exhausted and just want them to be happy. But without a parent-led routine, children can struggle to feel the safety of a predictable boundary and the expectations we can set for them as parents. This can lead to a cycle of overtiredness and frequent wake-ups, leaving everyone exhausted.
