Extending Leverage: Part 2

With two 30” halligans married at the forks, you have a total of about 55” because the forks are married at the crotch. The mechanical advantage is roughly 27.5:1. Remember, this is rough, theoretical mechanical advantage that’s changing as you move throughout your force. #πšπš›πšŠπš’πš—πš’πš—πš

Extending Leverage: Part 1

Extending leverage with your tools. On an outward swinging door, using the adz, your mechanical advantage is approximately 15:1.

By extending your leverage with a 6’ hook, it increases to 36:1, with an 8’ hook it increases to 48:1. #πšπš›πšŠπš’πš—πš’πš—πš

Be methodical in your searches. Find a bed? Do the gorilla. Always check the top bunk first. Victims higher in elevation are our priority. #πšπš›πšŠπš’πš—πš’πš—πš

Induction Loops

Often times at commercial properties induction loops are used to open gates for vehicles leaving the inside of a gated parking lot.

A knowledgeable firefighter can gain access to the parking area with ladders, hooks, or metal jack plates from their truck.

An induction loop operates off of electromagnetic principles. When it senses metal, it sends a signal to open the gate.

I first learned about this technique years ago from the Vent Enter Search website. I’ve used it successfully probably 5 or 6 times either on calls or training.

It is a great way to gain access for a fire after hours OR for smells and bells. I once used it to gain access to a facility with a water gong activation. Once on the property, we were able to confirm smoke and force entry into the building itself.

I had questions about this specific one in the video so I turned to Sam Hittle. Some tips I learned from him include: It is important to note that this method will not always work. Sometimes a pressure plate is used for activation and it may look like an induction loop. Sometimes the induction loop is no longer in use and other means have been installed for alerting the gate to open.

Bottom line, it may work, it may not. It’s a great idea and worth a shot on calls. However, it’s also a great idea to test these as you discover them in your first due and make a note of where you can and can not get away with using it.
