There are moments in life that change you, and serving as Birmingham’s Anchor Partner for StoryCorps and executing the The Community Playback for Brightness in Black has been one of those moments.
Over the past several weeks, I’ve had the privilege of watching our city do what it does best: show up. We celebrated Legacy Businesses, honored veterans, listened to stories that made us laugh and cry, welcomed people from every walk of life, and ended it all with a room full of neighbors celebrating Birmingham’s voice together.
As a little girl who dreamed of becoming a journalist, I never imagined that one day I would help preserve the stories of others. To know that conversations collected here in Birmingham will live forever in the Library of Congress is something I will never take for granted.
To Tojia Dawkins thank you for making me apart of the team, thank you for trusting me with your vision. Kelvin, thank you for believing Birmingham was ready and for entrusting me to help bring Brightness in Black to life in a way that reflected the heart of this city. That trust is something I will always cherish.
To every community partner, sponsor, volunteer, vendor, media partner, elected official, storyteller, and attendee, thank you. This wasn’t my accomplishment. It was ours. You opened doors, shared your gifts, welcomed strangers, and reminded me that collaboration will always accomplish more than one person ever could.
To my parents, thank you for teaching me that purpose and integrity are not just words, but a way of life. And to my two beautiful children, Xander and Lennox, everything I build is because of you. You gave me my “why,” and every opportunity to serve is rooted in creating a better future for you and for the communities we call home.
Most of all, I thank God. There were moments when this assignment felt far bigger than me, but He continued to make a way, provide the right people, and remind me that when you lead with purpose and service, He will handle the rest.
Tonight, Birmingham didn’t just remember its history. Birmingham became part of the permanent American story.
My heart is full. Thank you, Birmingham, for trusting me with yours. ❤️
