Ten years, or one.

Building a foundation is not the exciting part. It's slow and it's unglamorous and nobody's going to like your post about it.

But you started this for a reason. Money, or time, or wanting your kids to watch you build something. The foundation is what makes those actually arrive instead of staying the thing you're working toward.

The best burger doesn't win.

You know this. You can make a better one in your backyard than McDonald's can, and McDonald's is worth $238 billion.

Not the best burgers. Not the best fries. Just the best at business.

It should work the other way. The people who are best at the thing should be the ones who do best. That's not how any of it works, and nobody tells you that before you start.

You're still working the job.

That's the part that's hard to say out loud. The business is real, the clients are real, you're genuinely good at the thing. And you still can't quit.

So you hit the pavement again. Post again. Try the thing somebody in a Facebook group suggested. And it doesn't move.

You're great at what you do. Nobody ever said you'd also have to be great at business.

It's cheaper to fix the foundation before there's a whole business sitting on top of it.

That's the argument for doing this now instead of next year. Every month you wait, the fix gets more expensive, because now you're changing pricing on existing clients and rebuilding systems people already depend on.

And this isn't the fun part. It's the back-end work nobody sees, and it's slow. Nothing about it is glamorous.

It's also the thing that decides whether you're still here in five years when your competition isn't.

Do you know why you charge what you charge?

A slow season. A bad quarter. A pandemic.

Two businesses hit the same wall and one of them survives it.

The difference isn't luck and it isn't talent. The one that makes it knows its numbers. It knows where the money actually comes from. It knows which lever to pull when things go sideways, because somebody built those levers on purpose.
