For Tree ID Tuesday, we're taking a closer look at ways to identify longleaf pine.

Did you know that the large, pale-white terminal bud is characteristic of longleaf pine compared to other pines in North Carolina?

The terminal bud contains the developing tissues that will produce the tree's next flush of growth. Once growth begins, a new shoot emerges from the bud, bringing with it a fresh cluster of longleaf's characteristically long needles.

Friday Fun Fact!

Longleaf pine habitats display remarkable diversity across regions, categorized into sandhills, montane areas, rolling hills, and flatwoods/savanna. Each type features unique characteristics, highlighting the ecological richness of longleaf pine environments. The sandy soils of sandhills, the elevation of montane regions, the rolling landscapes, and the expansiveness of flatwoods and savanna all contribute to this vibrant tapestry of life.
