Hustle isn’t always glamorous. Sometimes it’s just a bus ride and a borrowed clipboard. 🚌 šŸ“‹

Flashback to 2002. Freshman year. I joined the dance team—and the fee was $500 (a fortune in teenage dollars). 🤯

With no way to pay, I borrowed a clipboard and set my mind on earning the whole amount through the team's ad sales fundraiser.
Think: brochures, local business ads, and lots of pavement. šŸ›£ļø

I rode the bus all over NE Portland, hopping out block by block, sharing my optimism about joining the "Parkrose Elite" and how they could advertise to a packed gymnasium of potential clients all at the affordable price of a business card to full page ad.

A coach spotted me outside Mervyn’s and asked what I was up to.
ā€œFundraising,ā€ I replied. She laughed. I kept walking. šŸš¶ā€ā™€ļøā€āž”ļø šŸ“‹

By the end of summer, I’d raised $850. Highest out of 50 girls, allowing some to roll over to the next year’s dues (and buy a state competition hoodie!).

I don’t tell this story to hype up my sales chops. Shout out to all you full-time sales pros. Truthfully, I don't believe I'm skilled. But sometimes, determination trumps discomfort.

Now, as a professional "adult" offering HR services to businesses, my version of hustle looks different, but it's still full of determination.

It’s not a number. It’s a partnership. It's solving a problem a company has.

Fast isn’t always risky. Slow isn’t always strategic.

As a business owner, you’ve likely faced this moment:
A high-stakes decision is on the table. You need to act quickly!

I saw this scenario implode during peak COVID times. (I know, I know, this happened to the best of us, it was a Wild West kind of year.)

~A regional office had 2 cases of COVID. An out-of-state director wanted to shut it all down, send everyone home for 2 weeks (after having just brought everyone back from a 3 month at-home order). He told employees to "grab their computers and get out of there" which only fueled the mess.

The IT team was up ended. Employees were locked out of the software. HR (me, onsite, very knowledgeable about the precautions and requirements in Idaho) was NOT consulted.

Employees lost trust. Turned out there was only 1 COVID positive employee and he hadn't worked with anyone.

An all-for-not situation.~

Moral of the story:
HR isn’t there to pump the brakes. It's there to sharpen the turn;

āœ… Successfully passed the company through 2 OSHA audits
āœ… Decreased the work comp accidents and claim costs
āœ… Learned a TON about how safety impacts the company's profits
