🌲 Logger Spotlight: Jeff🌲

If you’ve spent any time around Untamed Timber, you know Jeff isn’t just the guy running the forwarder. He’s one of the best hand cutters around and a true woodsman through and through. Years of experience, countless hours in the forest, and a wealth of knowledge make him one of the toughest and most respected guys in the woods.

Jeff has seen a lot of timber in his day, and there’s not much he hasn’t done. Whether he’s laying down trees, finding the best way through a stand, or keeping wood moving to the landing, he gets the job done right. His knowledge of logging and the woods is something you can’t learn overnight—it comes from a lifetime of hard work and experience.

What makes Jeff even more important to Untamed Timber is that he’s the one who got Shane started. Long before Untamed Timber was a company, Jeff was bringing Shane to the woods, teaching him about logging, equipment, timber, and the work ethic it takes to make it in this industry. The lessons learned from him helped build the foundation of what Untamed Timber is today.

Around here, Jeff is more than a subcontractor—he’s family, a mentor, and a big reason for our success. We’re grateful for everything he brings to the job every day and proud to have him on the crew.

Spring break-up means a change of pace for us at Untamed Timber LLC

Instead of our usual work, we’ve been out clearing fence lines to help a local farmer open things up and turn multiple sections into one clean, workable field. It’s a different kind of job, but one that makes a big difference when it comes to efficiency and land use.

We’re also proud to be working alongside Complete Services Bonduel LLC on this project—they’ll be coming in to handle the stumping and dirt work to get everything fully prepped and field-ready.

We’re proud to help get things in shape for planting and make life a little easier for the folks who feed our communities.

We have planned ahead and have plenty of inventory to carry through Break-Up Season.

The Spring Thaw "Break-up" is a fact of life in the upper midwest. It's the period of time each spring when the ground thaws, releasing previously frozen moisture, and making the ground soft and muddy. During this period of time, usually lasting 3-5 weeks, it is impossible to get heavy logging equipment into hardwood forests or get logs out. Many counties impose road bans during this time due to the extensive and expensive damage heavy logging trucks can cause when the ground beneath the roads is soft. Because of this, many sawmills and lumber suppliers run short of supply.

At Granite Valley, we manage the season by: 1) stockpiling ahead at our own sawmills, 2) benefitting from our very expansive array of kilns, and 3) maintaining a massive climate controlled warehouse. Because we are uniquely able to plan ahead, our customers can rely on the availability of quality lumber and dependable delivery throughout the Break Up period.

🪵 Shane | Owner & Processor Operator

With 11 years in the logging industry, Shane is the owner of Untamed Timber and runs the processor. For him, logging is more than a job—it’s a way of life. While the pressure to keep wood moving is always there, the freedom of working in the woods and providing for his family makes it worthwhile.

“Working in the woods is beautiful, and it provides for me and my family.”

Shane’s favorite part of logging is the sense of freedom, and his words ring true for anyone who’s ever worked in the industry:

“Once you get sawdust in your boots, it’s hard to get it out.”

🪓 Jeff | Forwarder Operator & Hand Cutter

Jeff brings an incredible 45 years of logging experience to Untamed Timber. He subcontracts for Shane, operating the forwarder and hand-cutting oversized trees that the processor can’t handle.
What Jeff loves most about the job is the independence it gives him—and the opportunity to work side by side with his son every day.

“It’s smooth of course, been doing this for about 100 years. You gotta love what you do and then it’s not work.”
