One of the biggest misconceptions about wealth is that you can tell how much money someone has by looking at what they drive or where they live.

I've seen people with six-figure incomes living paycheck to paycheck, and people earning modest salaries who have quietly built impressive investment portfolios over decades.

There's nothing wrong with buying an expensive truck or a beautiful home if you can genuinely afford it.

But a $90,000 vehicle sitting in your driveway doesn't tell anyone how much you have in your retirement account, how much debt you're carrying, or whether you could afford to stop working tomorrow.

And driving an old Toyota doesn't automatically make someone financially responsible either.

The real difference is what happens to your money after you earn it.

You can spend your whole life trying to look wealthy, or you can use that money to build a life where you don't have to worry about proving it to anyone.

On Monday, October 12, Boston's Museum of Fine Arts is opening its doors to Massachusetts residents for FREE in celebration of Indigenous Peoples' Day.

And this isn't some little museum you can walk through in 20 minutes.

The MFA is one of the largest art museums in the country, with everything from ancient Egyptian treasures to paintings by world-famous artists.

They're also hosting special gallery tours, family art activities, and opportunities to explore Indigenous art and culture.

Here's what you need to know:

You don't need advance tickets. Just provide a valid Massachusetts ZIP code when you arrive. Admission is first-come, first-served, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Regular adult admission is $27, so a family with two adults and two teenagers could save $94 on tickets alone.

And if you can't make it October 12, the MFA also offers pay-what-you-wish admission with a $5 minimum on the third Thursday of each month after 5 p.m.

Not a bad way to spend a day without spending a small fortune.

I can see why this homeowner is considering it.

Instead of collecting one lump sum from selling his house, he could earn 6.25% interest on the amount he finances while giving a buyer a chance at a better mortgage rate.

And seller financing isn't anything new. People have been buying and selling homes this way for decades.

But here's where I'd draw the line.

Helping your own child buy a house this way is one thing. Financing a home for a complete stranger is an entirely different conversation.

You're essentially becoming the bank, except you don't have the bank's resources to fall back on when things go wrong.

What happens when the buyer loses their job, stops making payments, or lets the house fall into disrepair?

Yes, the property serves as collateral, but getting it back could involve months of legal expenses, foreclosure proceedings, and a house that needs thousands of dollars in repairs.

And let's not forget the money you're tying up. Instead of having access to the proceeds from selling your home, you're collecting payments over the next 15 or 30 years, paying taxes on the interest, and taking on the risk that those payments could stop.

Now, I can absolutely see this working with a financially qualified buyer, a substantial down payment, proper legal protections, and a seller who doesn't need that money anytime soon.

There are legitimate benefits for both sides, and I appreciate the idea of giving someone a chance at homeownership without relying entirely on a bank.

But personally, I'd have to think long and hard before putting that much of my financial future in the hands of someone I barely know.

Earning 6.25% interest sounds attractive until you're the one responsible for collecting it.

Meta is pouring billions into AI data centers, but before any of that technology works, somebody still has to build the place, run the fiber, install the electrical systems and keep the equipment running.

So the company launched Americaā€™s Workforce Academy, a free skilled-trades program backed by an initial $115 million investment.

The program is open to people with no prior data-center experience, and Meta covers the training, travel, lodging and a daily stipend while participants learn.

Graduates earn an industry-recognized NCCER credential, and Meta says a job with one of its contractor partners at a data-center site is already waiting for them when they finish.

The first pilot locations are in Texas, Louisiana, Ohio and Indiana, with training tied to jobs building Metaā€™s AI infrastructure.

And there are already real people coming through it.

A 22-year-old woman named Laniya from Iowa had been working as a data-center custodian when she started watching the fiber technicians and realized there was a better-paying path right in front of her.

Meta paid for her first-ever flight to Indianapolis, trained her to build servers and lay fiber, and she graduated headed back home to work as a fiber technician at a Meta data center.

Another graduate, Ethan, 26, had been working in retail sales and said he wanted to change careers but couldnā€™t afford to quit his job just to go train for something new.

Thatā€™s what makes this more interesting than another ā€œfree classā€ announcement: theyā€™re paying people to learn because they actually need the workers on the other side.

Meta says its earlier fiber-training initiative received 35,000 applications in the first seven days, which tells you thereā€™s no shortage of people looking for a different path.

For somebody stuck in retail, warehouse work or a job with nowhere to move up, four weeks of paid training with a credential and a job attached to it is worth knowing about.

AI may be changing white-collar work, but itā€™s also creating a lot of very physical jobs that still require somebody to show up with tools in their hands.

I really do think people were happier before 2020, and I can't quite explain what changed. Our money went further, we weren't stretching every dollar so thin, and going out to enjoy ourselves didn't feel like such a big expense. But it wasn't just about money. People seemed happier, more relaxed, more excited about life, and there was something about those days that I don't think we've gotten back.

We keep hearing that ā€œin the futureā€ AI and robots will take over the dangerous, dirty jobs nobody wants to do.

But why does that work always seem to be years away, while replacing office workers, writers, and artists is happening right now? There's no shortage of dangerous work, toxic waste, polluted oceans, or jobs that put people's health and lives at risk every day.

Imagine what technology could accomplish if protecting human lives and cleaning up the planet got the same investment and urgency as cutting labor costs. Maybe the problem isn't what AI is capable of doing, but what the people funding it are choosing to prioritize.

Dining out has become a math problem people are getting tired of solving.

Between higher menu prices, service fees, taxes, and tipping expectations, a casual dinner can start looking like a car payment.

I don't blame servers for wanting decent tips, and I don't blame customers for looking at the final bill and deciding they'd rather cook.

Restaurants need customers, servers need income, and customers need to feel like they're getting their money's worth.

But telling people they're too broke to eat out and should stay home is a pretty bold strategy for an industry that needs those same people to keep showing up.
