✨🌙Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is a sacred month of fasting, prayer, and devotion for Muslims worldwide🤲🏻. The significance of Ramadan is deeply rooted in the Qur’an.📿🕌
Ramadan was ordained as a time of fasting after the revelation of the following verse in the Qur’an:
“O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous.”
Fasting became obligatory in the second year after Hijrah (migration to Madinah). The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) fasted Ramadan for nine years before his passing.
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“Islam is built upon five (pillars): the testimony that there is no deity but Allah and that Muhammad is His Messenger, establishing prayer, giving zakat, fasting in Ramadan, and performing Hajj.”
The month of Ramadan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. The Angel Jibreel (Gabriel) would meet the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) every night in Ramadan to review the Qur’an with him.
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:
“When the month of Ramadan begins, the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained.” Ramadan is a special time for Muslims to seek closeness to Allah, as the obstacles to righteousness are reduced.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“Whoever prays on Laylatul Qadr with faith and seeking reward, his past sins will be forgiven.” This night is found in the last ten nights of Ramadan, particularly on odd nights.
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:
“Every deed of the son of Adam is multiplied ten to seven hundred times, except for fasting, which is for Me, and I will reward it Myself.” This Hadith emphasizes the special reward from Allah for those who fast.
Fasting helps Muslims develop self-discipline and piety. Muslims experience hunger and thirst, making them appreciate Allah’s blessings. Muslims break their fast together, pray in congregation, and support each other. The Prophet (ﷺ) was the most generous in Ramadan.
