I had a delightful time workshopping "the human side of business" a few weeks ago at both the Texas Treasury Management Association annual conference, Texpo, and at the annual joint seminar with the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (LA ACFE).

I called it "workshopping" rather than "presenting" because my sessions are always highly interactive, harvesting and sharing the collective wisdom in the room. No "talking heads" here!

I love workshopping with financial organizations because I firmly believe that unless and until those who hold the purse strings in an organization buy into the importance of "the human side of business" and fully recognize that their people are their greatest assets, progress toward organizations that are "Humane, Ethical, and Resilient" will be slow and minimal.

My sessions this time with Texpo and IIA/LA ACFE included lessons from Scrooge, Marley, George Bailey, Norman Dale, Neo, etc. and how those lessons can have a profound impact on "the human side of business." They can help turn your organization into "a workplace where people want to stay, instead of wanting to leave."

I just watched "Expecting Young," the first film in the Women's Voices Now Film Festival, and I'm crying my eyes out. It's beautiful and sad and hopeful and powerful, all wrapped up in one.

Please take some time to view these extraordinary movies, some of which are made by girls through the Girls Voices Now program, an arm of the Women's Voices Now program.

The Women's Voices Now Film Festival started April 15th and continues through May 20th. These are films made by women AND girls, for women AND girls. This year's theme is "Forward in Her Footsteps: Drawing strength from those who inspire us." The films range in length from 2 minutes to 34 minutes, so it's very "doable" to watch them, even with a busy schedule. :)

You can get a pass to the Festival here: wvnfestival.com/2026

I first learned about this Film Festival last year, and the movies show the lives of real women and girls in the real world - the tragedies, the joys, the strength, the inspiration. They are truly amazing. Please take the time to view some of these remarkable stories.

We interviewed one of the leaders of this beautiful organization, Heidi Basch-Harod, on our Women Investing In Women podcast a few months ago. You can see her interview here: https://bit.ly/WIIW-Film-Festival-Heidi-Basch-Harod

The upcoming Summit on AI is aptly named: "AI and the Future of Wellbeing." It is organized and hosted by the International Positive Psychology Association and will be held virtually next week, March 23th - 27th.

AI has impacted, and will continue to impact, every aspect of our lives - professionally and personally. Elements of AI have existed 1200 CE (BC) - a tiny boat with programmable robotic musicians (music! of course!) - and have threaded through society as technology has progressed. Now that technology is supercharged with computers, cellphones, "smart" watches, the internet, etc., our wellbeing in every aspect is touched - for better or for worse - by AI.

Learn how to move the needle toward wellbeing and attend this vital Summit next week. Learn more and register here: https://ippasummit.vfairs.com/

I am very excited to attend the virtual AI Summit organized and hosted by the International Positive Psychology Association (IPPA). I just learned about it, and it's coming up quickly, March 23 - 27, 2026! It is virtual and repeated twice each day to accommodate time zones around the world.

It will be led by Dr. Martin Seligman and will include AI and Positive Psychology professionals and luminaries from around the world, such as Dr. Llewellyn E. van Zyl and Dr. Angela Duckworth. This AI Summit will be where we "explore how AI can amplify, not erode, authentic human connection."

A few years ago, I led a round table at the New Economics for Women (NEW) Women's Business Center and created a handout featuring "Women In History as Models for Principles of Impactful Leadership." It looked at Joan of Arc, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Katherine Graham, and Malala Yousafzai as models of "Meaning, Belonging, Collaboration" which are core elements of leadership in any organization. Thought I'd share it again here!

Ruth Garcia-Corrales, Director of the NEW Women's Business Center does an amazing job creating important events to help small business owners, especially women business owners. Check it out at www.new-wbc.org.

One of the various hats I wear is being a Suzuki violin teacher. One would not expect a conference for “a bunch of string teachers” to incorporate elements from the “hard sciences” of business and AI, but the American String Teachers Association and Suzuki Association of the Americas joint conference in San Francisco last week did just that.

The opening Keynote by Alexander Laing, President and Artistic Director of Gateways Music Festival was superb. He discussed the elements of Innovation, Connection, and Personal Excellence, all of which are essential for a successful company. He also shed light on the “politics of organizations” and the commonalities that humans bring to every organization. He shared interesting notions about games, and “agency as art” in considering the constraints imposed within the structure of games. When the “score” becomes the main point and primary focus of the game, the nature of the game changes. Often for the worse.

Later in the week we heard another outstanding Keynote by Dr. Tina Tallon, Assistant Professor of Artificial Intelligence and Music Composition. She shared a brief history of the development of AI, including the delightful story of “Clever Hans,” a horse in the early 1900s that could add, answer questions with his hoof, etc. He traveled the world, amazing audience after audience. It finally took another look a human element to reveal the “genius” of Clever Hans – he could read the body language of his handler. When his handler wasn’t around, Clever Hans wasn’t quite as clever.

Another vital portion of Dr. Tallon’s research was the impact of bias on AI development, even if that bias is inadvertent. Bias impacts the focus of development and product formulation. One needs to ask “Who is not at the table, whose views and input we need to consider?” Her research correlates with that of Shubhi Rao, founder of Uplevyl, a platform created by women and for women. Shubhi shared how Virtual Reality headsets were made with the size of a man’s head in mind, and the designers didn’t consider how that size would impact the experience of a woman using the headsets. It gave them headaches, which made is less likely that they would engage. A few simple adjustments could have been made to solve a relatively simple problem. This raises the question - was a woman part of the design team?

As it took the human element to reveal the secret of Clever Hans, if an AI model looks at a dog and identifies it as a cow, we can rest assured that the human element is still important in AI development.

I love giving presentations on "corporate culture" to finance and treasury officers. I strongly believe that unless the people who "hold the purse strings” in an organization buy into the importance of “soft skills” – which are actually power skills – organizational progress and appropriate change will be haphazard and slow.

People “vote with their feet” and they also "vote" with their budgets and calendars. If treasury, finance, and accounting departments take concepts such as psychological safety, belonging, and collaboration seriously, and budget both time and financial resources to them, other departments will follow suit.

A supportive common culture and language can be fostered, making it easier to implement positive principles, behaviors, protocols, and norms throughout an organization. The entire organization can reap the benefits together.

If you're in the Dallas area this Thursday, February 19th, attend the Dallas Association for Financial Professionals (Dallas AFP) (DAFP) monthly evening meeting where we will learn about psychological safety, belonging, an collaboration, 5:30 - 8:00 pm. It will be held at:

The Clubs at Prestonwood
15909 Preston Rd
Dallas 75248

My presentations are always highly interactive, and are science-backed and evidence-based. They come with straightforward and actionable ideas that can be put to use "the next day."
