We extend our sincere gratitude to Jackson State University's College of Business, the Center for Academic and Professional Success, the director, faculty, and staff for inviting Etiquette and Protocol for Generational Leaders, LLC, to present during the summer program R.I.S.E. Together: Enhancing Student Academic Success and Professional Development.

Our two-day presentation, “From Student to Professional: Enhancing Academic Success, Leadership, and Professional Development,” was intentionally designed to support students in strengthening the soft skills needed for success beyond the classroom. The collegiates were highly engaged, enthusiastic, and eager to participate in every interactive activity and presentation opportunity, and for that, we are truly grateful.

We are confident this experience helped build confidence, strengthen professionalism, improve communication skills, develop leadership capacity, and increase understanding of etiquette, executive presence, networking, and workplace expectations. Most importantly, student reflections and feedback affirmed that they are leaving more prepared to transition confidently into professional environments.

We wish the collegiates and program leadership team continued success throughout the six-week program. Thank you again for the opportunity.

The Art of the Hosted Meal: Navigating Dining Protocol with Executive Presence 🍽️

Whether you’re on a corporate retreat or a student leadership trip, the menu protocol remains the same. When a mentor or VP is picking up the tab, should you order the most expensive options?

The short answer: No. Mastering the hosted meal is about social awareness, not maxing out the budget.

How to Navigate the Table:

🍽 The "Middle-of-the-Road" Rule: Aim for a mid-priced entrée. Ordering the most expensive item can appear opportunistic, while the cheapest might look like you aren't enjoying the experience.

❤ Follow the Leader: Take cues from your host. If they suggest an appetizer or mention a favorite dish, stay within that price range.
Ask for Guidance: A polite "What do you recommend here?" shows respect for your host’s taste and helps you gauge the appropriate level of the meal.

🤝🏾 Focus on the Connection: Choose a dish that is easy to eat while talking. Remember: you are there for the networking and the knowledge, the meal is just the centerpiece.

The Bottom Line: Your order is a reflection of your professional maturity. Show appreciation for the opportunity and keep the focus on the conversation, not the check!

Part 2: The Enduring Power of the Business Card 💳

Picking up where we left off yesterday, let’s take a close look at the image below.⬇️ Even in our high-tech world, the classic business card remains a vital tool for making a lasting impression. 🤝🏾

🌟 Etiquette Tip: The Two-Handed Exchange

When sharing your business card, offer it with both hands. This simple gesture signifies respect, humility, and the value you place on the professional relationship being formed. It turns a simple exchange into a meaningful connection.

Why the Business Card Still Wins:

📍Tangible & Memorable: In a sea of digital profiles, a physical card is a lasting reminder of your encounter. It helps you stand out and makes it easier for others to recall your face and your brand.

📍Convenience & Accessibility: No Wi-Fi? No problem. Business cards don’t require an internet connection or a charged phone. They are perfect for quick encounters where digital exchange might feel awkward or slow.

📍Professionalism & Trust: Handing over a well-designed card shows you are prepared and serious about your business. It conveys a level of legitimacy and attention to detail that a digital link simply can’t match.

📍Personalized Branding: Your card is a mini billboard! From your brand colors to a custom QR code, it provides a seamless way for people to dive deeper into your work.

📍The Perfect Icebreaker: Presenting your card is a natural way to initiate conversation and transition from a casual chat to a professional partnership.

Don't just exchange info, exchange respect.

How do you feel when someone hands you a physical business card today? Does it make the interaction feel more "official"? Let’s discuss in the comments! 👇

Networking: Your Most Powerful Career Tool🤝🏾

Networking isn’t just for those starting out, it is the heartbeat of professional growth at every stage of your journey. Whether you are a student, a mid-career professional, or an established leader, the power of connection is what truly moves the needle.

Why It’s Essential at Any Age:

📍For the Emerging Leader: It’s about more than finding a job; it’s about finding mentors who can help you navigate the "unwritten rules" of your industry.

📍For the Seasoned Professional: Networking keeps your pulse on industry trends and opens doors to collaborative partnerships that internal roles alone can't provide.

📍For the Veteran Executive: It’s your opportunity to pay it forward, building a legacy by pouring into the next generation while maintaining a high-level "brain trust" of peers.

Your next big opportunity, a promotion, a partnership, or a career pivot, is rarely found on a job board. It’s found in the conversations you have today.

Success isn't just about what you know, it’s about who knows what you can do.

Stay tuned! Tomorrow, I’ll be sharing why, even in our high-tech world, the classic business card remains an essential part of this process. What’s one networking connection that changed your career path? Share below! ⬇️

The Etiquette Edge: Beyond the Resume

A Morning Thought from Latisha M. Skinner, Founder & CEO of EPGLeaders

A flawless resume and a perfect GPA are impressive, but they are only the beginning. In the professional world, your soft skills often speak louder than your credentials.

Whether it’s an interview or a networking lunch, remember:

📱Presence over Pixels: Put the phone away. Constant scrolling signals a lack of discipline and disrespect for your host.

🤝🏾 Engagement is Key: Success is built on genuine connection. Be fully present and focused on the opportunity in front of you.

To the Collegiate: Be ready, be focused, and be mindful. Your dream career requires more than just good grades, it requires professional poise.
