Black History Month Spotlight: Celebrating General Hazel Johnson-Brown

Today, we honor General Hazel Johnson-Brown, a trailblazer who shattered barriers as the first Black woman to become a general in the U.S. Army and the first Black chief of the Army Nurse Corps.

Born in 1927, Johnson-Brown was rejected from nursing school due to her race but persevered, earning her nursing degree and joining the Army in 1955. She rose through the ranks, serving in Vietnam, leading medical training programs, and advocating for diversity in military healthcare. In 1979, she made history when she was promoted to brigadier general and appointed as the chief of the Army Nurse Corps.

Her leadership transformed military nursing, improving healthcare for soldiers and paving the way for future generations of Black women in the armed forces.

General Hazel Johnson-Brown’s legacy is one of resilience, excellence, and breaking down racial and gender barriers in military leadership.

Today, we honor Suzanne Shank, a trailblazing leader in finance and one of the most powerful women on Wall Street.

As the Chairwoman and CEO of Siebert Williams Shank & Co., Shank has built one of the nation’s leading minority- and women-owned investment firms. With a background in civil engineering and finance, she entered the world of investment banking and quickly rose to prominence, managing billions in municipal bond transactions that fund critical infrastructure projects across the U.S.

Shank’s success has shattered barriers for Black women in finance, earning her numerous awards and recognition as a champion for diversity in the industry. She continues to mentor and inspire the next generation of finance professionals.

Suzanne Shank’s story is a testament to perseverance, innovation, and the power of representation in finance.

Black History Month Spotlight: Celebrating Doris “Dorie” Miller

Today, we honor Doris “Dorie” Miller, a true hero of World War II and a trailblazer for Black service members in the U.S. Navy.

Born in 1919 in Waco, Texas, Miller enlisted in the Navy at a time when Black sailors were restricted to service roles. But on December 7, 1941, during the attack on Pearl Harbor, Miller’s courage changed history. Though not trained for combat, he manned an anti-aircraft gun, defending his ship, the USS West Virginia, and carrying wounded sailors—including his captain—to safety.

For his bravery, he became the first Black American to receive the Navy Cross, the Navy’s second-highest honor. His actions challenged racial barriers in the military, paving the way for full integration of the armed forces.

Dorie Miller’s heroism reminds us that courage knows no rank or race. His legacy lives on as a symbol of valor and perseverance.

Black History Month Spotlight: Celebrating General Benjamin O. Davis Jr.

Today, we honor General Benjamin O. Davis Jr., a trailblazing leader in the U.S. military and a key figure in the integration of the armed forces.

Born in 1912, Davis was among the first Black cadets at West Point, enduring four years of isolation and discrimination but graduating in 1936. During World War II, he commanded the Tuskegee Airmen, the first all-Black fighter squadron, proving their skill and bravery in combat. Despite racial barriers, Davis continued to rise through the ranks, becoming the first Black general in the U.S. Air Force.

His leadership and perseverance played a crucial role in desegregating the military. In 1998, he was promoted to four-star general, a long-overdue recognition of his contributions.

General Davis’s legacy reminds us that courage and perseverance can break barriers and change history.

Black History Month Spotlight: Celebrating Rev. Gardner C. Taylor

This Black History Month, we honor Rev. Gardner C. Taylor, a legendary preacher known as the “Dean of American Preaching.”

Born in 1918, Rev. Taylor became one of the most influential voices in Christian ministry and the civil rights movement. As the longtime pastor of Concord Baptist Church of Christ in Brooklyn, NY, he grew the congregation to over 10,000 members and used his pulpit to preach both the Gospel and the message of justice.

A close friend of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Taylor helped form the Progressive National Baptist Convention, which supported King’s work in civil rights. His dynamic preaching, deep biblical insight, and commitment to social justice earned him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2000.

Rev. Taylor’s legacy continues to inspire pastors and believers to boldly proclaim God’s truth while standing for justice.

This Black History Month, we honor Mellody Hobson, a powerhouse in finance and a champion for financial literacy and diversity in business.

As the Chairwoman of Starbucks and former President & Co-CEO of Ariel Investments, one of the largest Black-owned investment firms in the U.S., Hobson has broken barriers in an industry where Black women remain underrepresented. She is also a fierce advocate for financial education, believing that knowledge of money management can empower individuals and communities.

In 2020, she made history as the first Black woman to chair the board of an S&P 500 company at Starbucks. Through her leadership, she continues to pave the way for future generations in finance and beyond.

Mellody Hobson’s story is a testament to resilience, vision, and the power of representation in corporate America.
