He had a 10-year career at a major New York bank. Then he walked away for a storefront with no salary and no guarantee.

Today we're thinking about the work nobody claps for.

The prep that happens weeks before the keynote. The rewrites, the rehearsals, the 5am flights to make a 9am stage. The years of showing up before anyone was watching, so that when they finally were, the message landed.

That's the part of this industry people don't see. The applause happens in the room. The work happens long before it.

Everybody talks about the power of the dollar. Dr. Jamal Bryant showed what it actually looks like when you use it.

When Target walked back its DEI commitments in early 2025, Dr. Bryant didn't call for outrage; he called for a 40-day fast. Within a week, 50,000 people had signed on, backed by a directory of 250,000 Black-owned businesses to redirect spending to. Ten weeks of declining foot traffic later, this wasn't a boycott anymore. It was a balance-sheet problem somebody on a board had to answer for.

And the leverage hasn't gone away. This week, Target pulled a Halloween costume off shelves after backlash that it echoed Jim Crow-era minstrel imagery. Dr. Bryant's response: this "is not simply getting it wrong... it shows that Target still lacks corporate diversity among decision-makers and needs concrete internal change." A year later, the voice that organized the fast is still the one institution's answer to.

Nichole Pointdujour just got off a panel speaking at an Empire conference, and they asked her "What's one thing you would tell the audience to do in 2026?" And she told them, "Just start."

You know that idea that you have in the back of your mind, or that thing that people tell you you're really good at? So many people tell her these things, but they never start.

That voice that you're hearing, that's not timing, that's fear. It's supposed to scare you. It's supposed to feel bigger than what you know, than what you think you can do, but you can start.

Start tomorrow. Do one thing each day and build on your business. Just start.

Write out the vision, make it plain. You know they say that in the Bible.

Let's start working your business. We all have these ideas, but we have to begin to act on them.
