Pu-erh wasn't invented by accident on a caravan route, and it hasn't stayed the same tea for six hundred years. From Qing tribute cakes to Hong Kong warehouses, the 1970s invention of Shou, and today's obsession with ancient trees and mountain terroir, pu-erh has been reinvented again and again, and it's still happening.

How pu-erh evolved from a Yunnan trade good into Sheng, Shou, aged collector cakes, and modern GuShu mountain tea across three centuries.

Our tea-friend, Brian, went to Paris and came back with a treasure: two small bags of 1950s Pu-erh!

Neither I nor anyone I know has tried pu-erh that aged. So, a few days ago, I tried the 1950 "滄江樟蘊" Pu-erh for the first time and streamed it live on YouTube.

The video is 40 minutes long, unedited.
I intended this video as a real-time experience. Since I never had such aged pu-erh, I didn't know what to expect from this tea. I experienced it gradually, infusion after infusion. And this is how I would like to share it with those who are interested.

A friend sent us samples of Japanese fermented teas. The first one we opened is called Goishi. We expected a variation of Chinese Hei Cha but met aroma of preserved plums and taste of hawthorn. Very pleasant, bright and unexpected.
