Fashion has always been one of my favorite hobbies. I even thought about going back to study fashion, but instead it’s time for a school building leadership degree. But I’m digressing…thanks menopause brain!

Ever since my radical hysterectomy in October 2021 I’ve felt disconnected from my body.

As a dancer and a yoga teacher this was one of the hardest symptoms for me because I always had a strong connection my root chakra both physically and emotionally.

When we moved to Minnesota in 2022 this disconnect became even more apparent. Add to that my work from home life as a business owner and I lost the plot around fashion and fitness. I gained weight and embraced elastic waist bands.

When we moved back to Brooklyn in August things shifted; I wanted MORE. The daily walking and diving back into yoga helped but the desire was deeper in my soul, in my body.

The energy of the city, of the people, awakened something I thought was gone but instead was just dormant.

I started to desire fashion again.
I wanted more than elastic waist bands.
I wanted to be playful, sexy, stylish.

So I rented clothing from .style plus pulled out my own outfits from pre-hysterectomy life.

Add into that a brilliant building mirror and here are some of the highlights. I call it Monica’s Menopause Method…and it feels like I’ve come home.

Home to my body.

Because menopause, even surgical menopause, isn’t just physiological changes. It’s not a snap, crackle and pop moment.

It’s a journey. One that I’m constantly navigating. Hopefully with style and grace.

Now a few outfits that I enjoyed wearing; let me know your favorite 🥰

Menopause has kept me from having fun for too long. And I mean that in the joints hurting, hot flashing, belly fat sort of way.

Being back in NYC is reminding me of who I was before BRCA1 came into my life.

Before I was going for preventative cancer care every six months.

Before patches and mammograms and MRIs became part of my personal budget.

Before surgical menopause changed my body.

This picture is a moment of joy.

Joy found on the dance floor a week ago with my husband, as we got lost in the music for hours.

And then at 10pm we headed home, exhausted but glowing with love.

This is how we GET to do menopause.
And yes, it’s modern menopause because we are NOT over the hill.

We are not even quite to the top of the hill…because I haven’t peaked yet and you haven’t either.

So go ahead and throw on your sneakers, grab your boo or your bestie, and shake your tail feather because it’s your time 💥

And yes, my joints did hurt and I did have a hot flash and I did have a teeny headache, but it was worth it for this moment.

Four years ago I took my gynecological health in my own hands and had a total hysterectomy. I was 44 and literally on my period. We entered the hospital at 6am and when we left by 6pm I was in menopause. It was an awful night of hot flashes and disrupted sleep.

Looking back I don’t know if I made the right decision. But also, I get to look back. As a BRCA1+ woman who lost her sister to metastatic breast cancer when she was just 29 years old it is a privilege to be here, alive.

As we enter breast cancer awareness month I will never forget that her diagnosis saved my life. That metastatic breast cancer is still taking the lives of young women like her, leaving her children to grow up without their mom. And that stage 4 needs more.

Two resources that helped me from my BRCA diagnosis to my surgical menopause experience are for community around all things BRCA and for all things HRT (yay for estrogen replacement).

If you are also experiencing surgical menopause let’s connect. I’m launching a space for us as well, The Menopause Mingle™️, because it’s time for us to mingle and connect. We are not alone. You are not alone.

To many more years of life 🥰…
