In the 1930’s, animation was seen as a cheap novelty, and Hollywood didn’t take it seriously. Disney wanted to create something more immersive and lasting, but he faced financial struggles, competition, and technological limitations. Sound familiar?

Rather than following the crowd, and coming up with the same answers his competitors were also coming up with, he turned to innovation and creative solutions:

🐭 Disney redefined animation, by introducing synchronized sound in Steamboat Willie, making Mickey Mouse an instant hit, setting the foundation for today’s industry

🏰 Disneyland became a model for experiential entertainment and customer experience.

🎥 His strategy of expanding into multiple industries built an empire that still dominates entertainment today

A recent client who runs The Junkluggers went on the Plant Your Flag podcast, and shared this thought after attending one of my art-based creativity workshops:

"I'm not really an art guy. I dig it, but I don’t spend any free time going to art galleries…... but I'll be damned if it didn't open my eyes to something!"

In this particular workshop, we explored graffiti art, sculptures, and other visual elements to approach business problems from a fresh perspective.

This client, inspired by the creative exercises, went on to work with me in a six-week training session that delivered tangible, process-driven results.

What if I told you the biggest myth in problem-solving is believing there’s only ONE answer?

🥇 Think back to a major success you’ve had. Did you follow a single, perfect plan from start to finish? Probably not. You likely explored different options, adjusted your approach, and maybe even failed before landing on what worked.

Great leaders don’t look for THE answer—they look for multiple answers and adapt.

Mt. Irenaeus Case Study Pt. 4

With the task force and board, we translated each strategic headline into a future vision: "What will be happening at the Mountain when this goal is achieved?" This visioning exercise led us to define specific, actionable steps for each initiative.

📈 Today, board members and additional stakeholders are actively guiding and executing these actions. To date an assessment of each initiative shows that 500% progress has been made in less than 1 year after adopting the plan.

✅ Takeaway: When a strategic plan is built with a clear, future-focused vision, it can inspire rapid progress and meaningful impact.

During our prayer-based weekend at the Mountain, we guided over 30 participants from all stakeholder categories in a deliberate creativity process using the SOAR framework.

What is SOAR, you might ask? SOAR focuses on Strengths, Opportunities, Aspirations, and Results—a strengths-based approach that encourages forward-thinking.

🚀 Participants generated over 2,000 thoughts, (YES, 2,000!) clustered into actionable themes. By the end of the day, we had several high-potential ideas that would drive their strategic initiatives.

✅ Key Insight: Focusing on strengths and aspirations builds energy and momentum for real, actionable change.

In the next post, I’ll share how we translated these ideas into a vision-driven action plan.

Mt. Irenaeus Case Study Pt. 2

Once we gathered insights from interviews and focus groups, it was time to synthesize. Working with a qualitative research professional, we organized themes, unique perspectives, and key quotes into a 40+ page document—an in-depth look at the organization’s core needs, challenges, and opportunities.

🧠 To visualize these insights, we created a “mind map” that inspired open discussions, helping the team align on their current strengths and aspirations.

✅ Takeaway: Effective strategy depends on capturing and visualizing complex ideas. This clarity empowered the team to see their mission with fresh eyes and enthusiasm.

Next up, we take these themes to the Mountain for a unique planning weekend…
