Last week’s Activate NY August Innovators Social was an inspiring room to be in. The Advanced Science Research Center, GC/CUNY in West Harlem brought together hard-tech founders, scientists, mentors, and members of New York’s innovation ecosystem. The guest of honor was Dr. Marissa Beatty, a 2022 Activate Fellow and Founder & CEO of Turnover Labs, who shared her journey translating electrochemistry research at Columbia University into a company developing technology to convert industrial waste CO₂ into valuable chemical feedstocks. This event was co-hosted by Activate, ASRC Center for Advanced Technology (CAT), and Harlem Biospace – creating a hub for scientific entrepreneurs to connect, exchange experiences, and learn from those who have successfully made the transition from researcher to founder.

For scientists and engineers considering entrepreneurship, the Activate Fellowship is an opportunity well worth exploring. The two-year program provides funding, technical resources, entrepreneurial training, one-on-one mentorship, and access to a national community of founders, investors, researchers, and industry partners. Since launching in 2015, Activate has supported 346 fellows who have created 276 hard-tech companies, raised more than $5.5 billion in follow-on funding, and generated over 3,000 jobs – demonstrating what can happen when scientists are given the resources to turn research into real-world impact.

Happy National Intern Day! Today, Sevillian Laboratories celebrates the important role interns play in bringing fresh perspectives and advancing innovation while gaining meaningful, real-world experience in their field. We are especially proud to recognize our newest team member and Formulation Chemist Intern, Daniel Neuner, for his hard work and contributions this summer. It has been a privilege to mentor, collaborate, and learn alongside him as he applies his scientific acumen in an industry setting.

Dan joined Sevillian Laboratories through the New Jersey Career Accelerator Internship Grant Program (CAIGP), administered by the New Jersey Office of the Secretary of Higher Education (OSHE). The program expands access to paid, career-relevant experiential learning while helping New Jersey employers create opportunities for students to develop practical skills, explore career pathways, and contribute to real workplace projects.

A sincere thank you to the State of New Jersey for supporting students and employers through this program. We are honored to contribute to Dan’s professional development and to play a role in preparing the next generation of scientific talent for New Jersey’s workforce!

One year ago, Sevillian Laboratories attended NJ FoodTech. Our humble team of three had only been working together for a few weeks, but we hit the ground running - eager to learn and build our network. The twelve months that followed tested us with the trials and tribulations of running a startup. We took courses and webinars to strengthen our business acumen, conducted customer discovery interviews (still ongoing), pivoted our value proposition a few times, and grew our team.

Now, fast-forward to NJ FoodTech 2026: we were surrounded by fellow entrepreneurs, top industry experts, and mentors who have guided us along the way. This conference was a day of learning and collaboration, but also a time of reflection and gratitude for us. Each year, this event brings to the stage a select group of panelists and presenters who share invaluable insights and industry perspectives on scaling innovation and transforming ideas into viable business opportunities. This year more than 250 attendees filled the Douglass Student Center at Rutgers University to connect and indulge in meaningful discussions about propelling the future of food, business, and science.

Special thanks to Sho Islam, Kalindi Bakshi, Ph.D., Nolan Lewin, Joseph Liberato, and everyone at Middlesex County, NJ - County Government, and Rutgers Food Innovation Center who coordinated for months to host this event! And a huge thank you to our keynote speakers, Lou Cooperhouse, Founder & CEO of Blue Nalu, and Eugenia Oton Sanchez, Head of the Nestlé Product Technology Center, for sharing their expertise on the future of food and innovation. It was also lovely reconnecting with our mentors, Lori Dars, Mark Deguzman, and John Harwood from Rutgers I-Corps - and an additional shout out to our friends, Vetchay (Vee) Vilvert from Naturalvert, Zanda Pemba, Ph.D., and Tyrone Green from MATANGA research LLC!

We are excited for what this next year brings.

Sevillian Laboratories had the opportunity to participate in the Spring 2026 Rutgers University MBS Externship Exchange Program - a unique 12-week long initiative designed to connect graduate students with industry through real-world, project-based collaboration. For companies, the program provides access to high-caliber talent, structured ex*****on, and fresh, data-driven perspectives at no cost. While students are expanding their professional skills, organizations benefit from new ideas, structured project ex*****on, and meaningful insights that can help advance strategic initiatives.

The program concludes with Lightning Talk Presentations, where teams deliver concise, high-impact summaries of their work—followed by student recognitions and audience voting for the top presentations. This year’s cohort included organizations such as Colgate-Palmolive, Ingredion Incorporated, Bayer, Puratos Group, Robertet Group, Philadelphia Phillies - highlighting the program’s strong industry reach.

For our team, this externship was a valuable experience that not only expanded our capabilities, but also provided new insights into how we can continue to grow and improve as an organization. We effectively doubled our team and benefited from academic collaboration, thoughtful problem-solving, and detailed feedback from the student’s perspectives – gaining insights we can now apply to our day-to-day operations and future objectives. A special shoutout to Lori Dars for recommending this program, our Advisors Joey Liu, Ph.D., MBA and Varsha Kripalani for guiding the students, and our amazing team - Gary, Demi, Nichitha, Jason, and Makrand - for all of your hard work!

The Rutgers Professional Science Master's Program is now accepting applications for Summer and Fall cohorts. We highly encourage both prospective students and fellow businesses to experience this incredible opportunity!
