Celebrating National Small Business Week

As we commemorate National Small Business Week, I’m filled with deep gratitude and reflection.
I’ve been blessed to be in business for over 25 years, impacting more than 300,000 individuals and organizations through my work in business consulting, workforce/leadership development, coaching, and HR services.

But this journey didn’t begin with me—it’s part of a powerful legacy. I come from a long line of visionary entrepreneurs. As a child, I watched my grandparents, aunts, uncles, and older siblings run successful businesses—including farms, real estate ventures, beauty salons, and retail stores. They showed me what it means to work hard with integrity, serve your community, and build something that lasts.

Mr. Willie “Pack” Mayfield, a trailblazer in Chester, South Carolina. He owned and operated a thriving farm and the town’s only taxi service. He was a man of unwavering faith, deeply committed to his family and community.

Widely known and respected throughout the region, he was a shrewd businessman whose legacy lives on—not only in our family, but in the countless lives he touched.

He raised six strong daughters, all of whom carried forward his values of excellence, service, and leadership. I am one of many in our family who continue to walk the path he paved. I carry his legacy with pride—and honor all the small business owners whose passion and perseverance uplift our communities every day.

During this special week and always, I honor him—and all the small business owners whose courage, sacrifice, and resilience make our communities stronger. Your impact matters. Your work matters.

Here’s to the dreamers, doers, and difference-makers. You are valued and needed….now more than ever.

Maryland Association of County Officers Winter Conference.

Enjoyed facilitating a workshop on Teambuilding and Consensus for government leaders from throughout the State of Maryland.

I have joined the Academy for Excellence in Local Government as an instructor. I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this impactful program.

The Academy provides essential information for elected officials and County Government employees to take back to their respective counties to help improve government efficiency.

College of General Studies alumna Karenthia Barber is an entrepreneur at heart, starting her first business—selling snow cones from the back of her family’s home—at age 9.

That same trailblazing spirit led her to found her firm that provides leadership and workforce training, executive coaching and human resources consulting services and serve as the first Black woman on the Maryland Port Commission.
