***Call for Papers for 1st Bangladesh Economics Summit 2018***

The theme of the paper presentation competition is “Road towards a Developed Nation: Addressing Inequality and Growth Prospects for Bangladesh”

Emerging as a developing country in the recent times, Bangladesh faces complex socio-economic challenges in its path towards becoming a developed country. Often referred to as the development paradox, the country’s economic growth remains vulnerable to various internal and external factors; a phenomenon no stranger to countries of the global south. As is the case in such circumstances, the controversial trade-off between growth and equality continues to be central to the discourses on development in Bangladesh. Furthermore, whether development policies should be pivoted around structural transformations and shifts or should be more focused on HDI indicators, is an issue of debate.

ESC calls for papers on the stated theme, which would fully comprehend the context discussed above and present analyses accordingly.

Authors are encouraged to look into the issues related to widening socio-economic inequality in the context of Bangladesh and its effect on the economy’s growth. In that regard papers can focus on minimum wage issues, conditions of the working class and peasantry, relation between income inequality and discriminatory accumulation of wealth. Identifying the reasons behind jobless growth and its future impact can also be the focus of the papers.

The authors are welcome to present their assessment of existing policies regarding these issues, suggest policy alternatives, offer Political economic critique of the subject and historical case studies in their research papers.

Regulations for Research Papers:

1. Font type: Times New Roman

2. Font size: 16 for section headings, 14 for sub-headings, 12 for text, 10 for footnotes

3. Bold and italic are accepted

4. Line spacing: 1.15

5. Paper size: 4000 words at maximum (10-12 pages, excluding cover page)

6. Page numbers: top-right

7. Color: black and white only

8. Referencing: Harvard style

9. Cover page instructions: The following pieces of information must be present in the cover page of the paper in the given sequence

- [On the top of the cover]: 1st Bangladesh Economics Summit 2018
- Title of the paper, as decided by the author
- Name of the author, session, year, semester, department and university (sequentially)
- Abstract of the paper, not exceeding 200 words

Competition Guideline:

1. The authors can use primary survey data / secondary data / focus group discussion / case study / review of the issue / modelling economic theory / econometric tools.

2. The research paper must be original. Plagiarism will result in disqualification.

3. Co-authored papers are allowed. But all the following conditions must be met-

a) The number of authors can not be more than two
b) Both the authors must be from undergraduate programs (who have not completed their bachelor’s degree)

• Only one of the authors will be allowed to give the presentation in the competition. It is imperative that the authors reach a mutual consent and decide the presenter accordingly.

4. The research papers will have to be submitted to Economics Study Center prior to the competition. The deadline for submission is 16th October 2018.

- The paper must be submitted in pdf format. No other format will be accepted.

- The submission must be made to [email protected]

5. At the first stage of the competition a panel of experts will examine the academic quality of the paper. Sixty percent (60%) of the marks will be weighed on this evaluation.

6. At the second stage of the competition, the presentations on the papers at the competition will be adjudged by a panel of judges. Forty percent (40%) of the marks will be weighed on the paper presentation.

7. The papers will be ranked based on the aggregated marks obtained in the two stages of the competition.

8. The best paper will be awarded 20,000 BDT

9. The second-best paper will be awarded 10,000 BDT

10. The papers presented at BES will be published in ESC’s annual students journal “Bangladesh Students’ Digest on Economics and Development”, upon the authors’ consent.
