🚒💧 Another update on Major Incident Water for Fire Suppression

Lake County Fire Protection District and Lake County Water Association are continuing to move forward with our Major Incident Water for Fire Suppression Operations Plan, and what started as a focused effort has grown into something much bigger.

In February 2026, Redbud Health District awarded $75,000 toward the purchase of five portable hydrants. These hydrants will be strategically located within the service areas of Clearlake Oaks Water, Lake County Special District’s Spring Valley, Soda Bay Water Company, and Nice Mutual Water Company.

While these locations are not within the Lake County Fire Protection District coverage area, large-scale incidents know no jurisdictional boundaries — and neither will our mission.

What began as a monthly meeting between LCFPD and our five in-district water company partners to establish a comprehensive, district-wide alternate water system to support firefighting operations during large-scale emergencies has now evolved into a countywide initiative.

This is what collaboration looks like: water agencies, fire protection, and community partners working together to build a stronger, more resilient emergency response system for all of Lake County.

These innovative hydrants can be placed near a non-potable water source, such as a pond or lake, and provide a reliable water supply to fire engines and water tenders.

The best part? They can be moved wherever they're needed most, helping firefighters access water in areas where traditional hydrants aren't available.

Sometimes the best water source isn’t anywhere near the road.

For this setup, we had to winch the pump down to the river to reach the available water. Once positioned at the source, the pump can move that water uphill to a Remote Hydrant located where fire apparatus can safely access it.

That’s the purpose of Remote Hydrants: bring the water access point to the apparatus instead of trying to bring the apparatus to the water.

Rivers. Ponds. Lakes. Tanks.
Existing water can be extremely valuable—if firefighters can access it.
