Liver abscesses in cattle continue to represent a persistent and expensive issue for the U.S. beef industry, affecting both offal and carcass value. We’ve been working hard at making sure we’re part of this solution.

Some of our team attended the American Dairy Science Association Discover Conference Series focused on Beef x Dairy this past fall, where this issue was a big part of the discussion.

Dr. Ty Lawrence from West Texas A&M University shared that liver abscesses have been the leading cause of liver condemnations since the 1940s and the economic toll continues to climb. Current estimates place annual industry losses at over $600 million.

These losses go beyond the condemned livers themselves, extending to reduced gain:feed efficiency, lower hot carcass weights, and increased trimming requirements.

Decreasing the appearance of liver abscesses is a top priority for our team.

The transition from milk to solid feed isn’t just a dietary change...it’s an important step in building a calf’s future digestive powerhouse: the rumen.

The rumen undergoes major transformations in a calf, including the rapid growth of papillae, maturation of the epithelium for nutrient absorption and microbial colonization and gene expression shifts.

Early dietary interventions make all the difference. The right starter diets help optimize rumen growth and functionality, setting calves up for better health and performance down the road.

Investing in this stage pays off in lifetime productivity, especially when calf prices hit what they did in 2025.
