What Are Silverfish — and Why Are They in My House?

Ever spot a tiny, silvery bug darting across the bathroom floor and wonder what it was? 👀

You may have found a silverfish.

Silverfish are small, wingless insects that prefer dark, damp areas like bathrooms, laundry rooms, closets, attics, and under sinks. They don’t bite or sting, but they can become a nuisance indoors — and they may feed on things like paper, cardboard, wallpaper glue, fabrics, and other starchy materials.

A few things that can make your home more inviting to silverfish:

💧 Excess moisture or humidity
📦 Stored cardboard and paper
🚿 Damp bathrooms or laundry areas
🏠 Cracks and gaps that give them places to hide

Seeing one every once in a while isn’t necessarily a major problem, but frequent sightings can be a sign that there are more hiding nearby.

Keeping moisture under control and reducing clutter can help — and if they decide they really like your home, Total Home Pest Solutions can help. 🏡

🎒 **Back-to-School Pantry Check!**

With school back in session, many of us are stocking up on cereal, crackers, granola bars, baking supplies and other quick snacks.

Unfortunately, some pantry pests can hitch a ride home in packaged foods — and once they get into your pantry, they can spread quickly.

A quick pantry check can help:

✅ Look for tiny holes, webbing or insects inside food packages
✅ Store flour, cereal, rice, pet food and other dry goods in sealed containers
✅ Wipe up crumbs and spills, especially in pantry corners and on shelves
✅ Check older packages before adding new groceries
✅ If you find pantry pests, inspect the surrounding foods too — the problem may not be limited to one package

Common pantry pests include **Indian meal moths, grain beetles and weevils**.

A few minutes of prevention now can save you from having to toss an entire shelf of snacks later. 😬

🐾 Happy National Dog Day! 🐾

Today is all about celebrating the four-legged family members who make life a little more fun — and a lot more furry. 💙

Unfortunately, our dogs can also bring home some very unwelcome hitchhikers: fleas and ticks.

Ticks can hide in tall grass, brush and shaded areas around the yard, while fleas can quickly make themselves at home on pets, carpets, furniture and bedding.

A few simple ways to help protect your pup:
🐶 Keep your pet on a veterinarian-recommended flea & tick preventative
🌿 Keep grass and vegetation trimmed around frequently used areas
🔎 Check your dog for ticks after outdoor adventures
🏠 Address flea problems early — once they're established indoors, they can be much harder to eliminate

Give your dog an extra treat today... and maybe a quick tick check too. 😉

Happy National Dog Day from Total Home Pest Solutions!

It’s hot out there — even for the bugs.

When temperatures climb and the ground dries out, your home can start looking pretty inviting to pests searching for moisture and shelter.

You may notice more activity around:

Doorways and garages
Kitchens and bathrooms
Plumbing penetrations
Areas around AC units
Shady, damp spots around the foundation

Seeing more bugs indoors during a heat wave doesn’t necessarily mean they suddenly appeared — they may simply be moving around more in search of better conditions.

A little prevention goes a long way: seal gaps, repair dripping faucets, keep pet food picked up and avoid excessive moisture against the foundation.

And if they’ve decided your house is their summer vacation spot… give us a call. 😄

**WHAT IS THIS CREATURE?**

A customer recently sent us this photo, and at first glance you might think you’re looking at a baby scorpion.

Meet the **pseudoscorpion** — sometimes called a *false scorpion* or *book scorpion*.

Despite those impressive pincers, these little arachnids are harmless to people and pets. They don’t have the long tail or stinger of a true scorpion, and they’re actually considered beneficial because they prey on other tiny critters such as mites, small flies, ants and carpet beetle larvae.

🔎 **How to recognize one:**
• Tiny, tick-like body
• Large scorpion-style pincers
• 8 legs
• **No tail or stinger**

**Fun fact:** Some pseudoscorpions even hitch rides on larger insects like beetles to get from place to place!

So if you spot one of these little guys, there’s usually no reason to panic — it may actually be helping with pest control.

Thank you Paige Fletchall for sending us this great photo!

☀️ Summer isn’t over yet — and neither is pest season.

By August, we’ve already had months of warm weather giving many pest populations plenty of time to grow.

That can mean more activity from ants, roaches, spiders, mosquitoes, fleas, ticks and other pests around East Texas homes.

If you’ve been noticing a few more unwanted visitors lately, you don’t have to wait until it becomes a bigger problem.

Total Home Pest Solutions can help keep pests where they belong — outside.

🏠 One area of your home pests LOVE to sneak into? The garage.

Garages provide plenty of hiding places and often have more gaps and openings than the rest of the house.

Spiders, roaches, scorpions and other occasional invaders may slip in around garage doors, stored boxes, plumbing openings and cracks along the foundation.

A few simple habits can help:
✔️ Keep cardboard and clutter off the floor
✔️ Check the seal along the bottom of the garage door
✔️ Avoid storing pet food in open bags
✔️ Keep leaves and debris cleared away outside

And if you’re finding more pests than you’d like, we can help.
