"IF YOU ARE BROKE, IN DEBT, HUNGRY, LONELY, MISERABLE, LOST & STARTING OUT IN SALES...
Selling out of some piece of s**t vehicle, perhaps in a NEW area, community, or state... Donβt feel alone. So did I.
YOU CAN SELL YOUR WAY OUT OF MISERY, DEBT, and DESPAIR!
Back in 1999 when I started in industry sales, I had $80K in graduate school loan debt and $30k in credit card debt, living paycheck to paycheck - Broke AF.
Prior to that I had served three years overseas in the Military, but the Army College Fund didn't cover enough, and almost nothing for Grad School. Hence, the Debt.
That W-2 βcorporate dream jobβ I got after graduating with an MBA degree made me quickly realize I was never going to make the big money I dreamed of, let alone get out of debt anytime soon.
"Go to College, Get a Degree, Find a Job or Career, Buy a House..."
That βAmerican Dreamβ I was sold growing up was a Fugazzi (Italian Slang for "Fairy Dust").
So, I started looking around for a Sales Opportunity with unlimited income potential...
In the Summer of 1999, I met a guy named Tom Romero from Denver who was in Minneapolis selling after the May 15, 1998 HailStorm and he talked me into working part time cold calling and selling roofs "door to door" related to Hail Claims.
I began cold calling and door knocking out of my falling apart, 3000 GT, that didn't go in reverse, because I didnβt have enough money to fix the transmission, let alone get a new truck or SUV.
I never pulled into the customer's driveway because I was afraid they would see me have to push the car to go backwards.
The company I sold for didnβt have folders/literature so I would buy those cheap blue folders at Target and make my own... they didnβt offer car magnets, or leads, or have much brand identity in the market, and I had only temporary business cards my first 30 days...
I thought it was a MN Company I was working for, but it was actually a "Set" run by some cool dudes from TX. A "Set" is Storm Slang for Joint Venture.
My first ladder was a very complicated fold up of multiple sections that I had a lot of difficulty opening. So not only did I have to carry a bulky ladder all the way up the long driveway, it also took me several minutes to properly open each section and lock before using it and the same taking it down and carrying it back.
I started selling in 1999 (the big storm was actually May 15, 1998) so it was a full year later when all the βgood areasβ were supposedly sold or saturated.
Note: A market is never saturated, there is just less slam-dunk, low hanging fruit, precisely when all the big competition is also leaving, or gone.
Great time to clean up whatβs left!
I am 100% certain now, I looked like a damn fool back then selling next to those Industry Players with custom wrapped company trucks, and much more experienced sales associates, who had better equipment with great uniforms and marketing literature.
But at that time, I was just happy for a way to get out of debt and greatly appreciated this unique Opportunity.
My hunger, hustle, and personality must have prevailed because a lot of people (in some very nice homes) signed with me. (Maybe they felt badβ¦).
Within 6 months of cold calling and inking deals, I started seeing some solid final cap-outs, making close to $70k in sales commissions!
So I bought a brand new Jeep Cherokee, quit my day corporate job, and went full time as an industry sales associate.
By the end of that first year I upgraded to the first Cadillac Escalade SUV (with TVs in it!) and was not only selling but recruiting/training sales associates for the Company, eventually becoming the Sales Manager.
I was HUNGRY and HUSTLED, sold $3.2M my 2nd year in the industry, making close to $400K in Sales Commissions!
By the end of my 2nd year, I bought my first house in Minnetonka, MN, a lot of nice furniture, and a 2nd rental property.
This all happened as an Industry Sales Associate-and Sales Manager.
I eventually outgrew those companies, and evolved to become the Owner-Entrepreneur, a licensed GC/Roofing Contractor.
Then I did what many Industry Entrepreneurs do when they launch their first company and tried to Conquer the World.
As Owner-Entrepreneur I opened offices across 18 states and even one in Australia briefly, achieving $173M+ in Revenue over 10 years, made #30 on the TOP 100 Contractor List in 2012 - RC Magazine and was one of the largest Storm Restoration Contractors in America.
(Yes, that's right I am a Storm Chaser!)
I opened up offices across MANY HailStorm States in tornado alley and into the East Coast... MN, IL, OH, MO, CO, KY, TN, VA, MD, DC and FL for Hurricane Charlie, Frances, Jean & Wilma - rebuilding entire communities there.
I chased a Hailstorm all the way to Brisbane, Australia and opened an PTY, LTD - Joint Venture with a $40M Restoration Company in the land down under!
Looking back now, it's crazy how a part-time job knocking doors for a roofing company after a storm made a HUUUUGE change and shift in my life ...
We all start somewhere, and sometimes being HUNGRY is the best place to start, that is as long as you make the decision to work your ass off to improve... and change your life forever.
For me, this "Industry journey" all started back in that crappy 3000GT that didnβt go in reverse... broke with $80k of college debt, living in a studio apartment, with NOTHING to my name... but the gift of gab, an ink pen, and a burning desire to improve my life.
That "early experience" as a Sales Associate and later as a General Contractor opening offices across many states led to what eventually became (SVG), and many other companies I launched.
Fast Forward to 2023...

Feel free to get a copy of my book βWin The Gameβ - read my story and get the Blueprint to SCALE IT in the $100B+ Roofing, Solar, & Storm Restoration industry (and some of my many failures to avoid).
Looking back on my 22 years in the industry...
I will never forget those early days of being hungry and hustling "door-to-door" on the streets of MN and Chicago NW suburbs...
I will always be grateful for the Opportunity this Industry gave me way back then to get out of debt, upgrade my life, make My First Million (EBITDA, not Revenue) in a calendar year and evolving to become the Entrepreneur I am today.
BE. KNOW. DO."
