When I was 19 years old I went to work for KHUM 95.7 radio in Topeka, Kansas.

It was my first day and the manager gave me a stack of green bar paper about 2-3 inches thick. He said, "If you can't collect money, you can't sell radio."

How do I do that?
"Simple, this list of who owes us money. You walk in and say, "I am Lowell Lane with KHUM radio and I am here to pickup a check". Shut up and wait!

It worked, I collected $35,000.00 in payments that week.

The manager said I was ready to start selling radio.

That was a fun job, my territory was Lawrence, Ks. It was a great little town with lots of shops and small family businesses. I loved it!!

My boss once asked me to go for a ride in his car. He said, "I want you to create a new department to sell new business, over the phone." I asked what that looked like. He handed me a blank piece of paper and said, "I don't know, but you'll figure it out."

I've spent more than 30 years helping business owners build something that works — first in business-to-business sales and management, and later as the owner of five businesses of my own.
