Celebrating Juneteenth: Freedom Day

On Juneteenth, we a day for recognition, restoration and celebration. Juneteenth marks the historic moment on June 19, 1865, when the last enslaved African Americans were freed in Galveston, Texas – over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

As we celebrate Freedom Day, let’s take time to reflect on the significance of this day in American history and recognize the ongoing journey towards equality and justice.

Join us in commemorating Juneteenth:

* Reflect: Take a moment to learn about the history and importance of Juneteenth.

* Celebrate: Share how you’re celebrating this day with your community.

* Advocate: Continue to support and uplift Black voices, businesses and communities.

Together, let's honor the past, acknowledge the present and work towards a future of true freedom and equality for all. Happy Juneteenth from Sky Heart Home Care! ❤️🖤💚

Wellness Wednesday Tip: Mind Your Sodium Intake

Being mindful of your sodium intake can significantly reduce the risk of disease and improve quality of life as we age. Did you know that reducing salt consumption for just six months can notably lower your risk for stroke, heart disease, and kidney disease?

The average American consumes a staggering 3400 mg of salt daily, far exceeding the recommended intake of 2300 mg. But fear not! Here are some simple ways to cut back:

1. Read food labels carefully and opt for low-sodium or reduced-sodium options when available.

2. Get creative with spices to add flavor without the sodium.

3. When using canned beans and veggies, drain and rinse them to remove excess salt.

4. Opt for grilling, roasting, or sautéing your food to enhance its natural flavors.

5. Incorporate high-potassium foods like bananas and avocados into your diet.

6. Choose whole, less processed foods whenever possible.

By making these small adjustments, you can take proactive steps toward better health and well-being. Your body will thank you!

Tuesday Tip: Hydration Matters More Than You Think

As temperatures rise, dehydration becomes a serious concern - - especially for older adults. Many seniors don't feel thirsty as often as they did when they were younger, making it easier to become dehydrated without realizing it.

Signs of dehydration may include:
✔️ Dizziness or lightheadedness
✔️ Fatigue or weakness
✔️ Headaches
✔️ Confusion or increased forgetfulness
✔️ Dark-colored urine

💡 Simple ways to stay hydrated:

*Keep a water bottle within reach throughout the day.
*Eat water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumbers, and oranges.
*Set reminders to drink water regularly.
*Limit sugary drinks and excessive caffeine.
*Check in on aging loved ones during hot weather.

A few extra glasses of water each day can help support energy, cognition, and overall well-being.

At Sky Heart, we believe small daily habits can make a big difference in maintaining health and independence. ❤
