Duke Energy's recent ROE request in North Carolina is the third-highest ROE request among all recent rate cases filed across the country. Duke would earn $713 million from its NC utilities and increase ratepayer costs by $64 million above its current ROE.

This brief examines the ROE request by Duke Energy in its recent NC rate cases compared to other recent ROE requests.

The results of Georgia Power's 2029-2031 All-Source RFP are out. Although battery energy storage systems (BESS) and solar were selected, all of these proposals are company-owned. The only PPAs are for natural gas resources. Of the 8 GW in resources selected by Georgia Power, here is the breakout:

Company-owned natural gas plants: 3,692 MW

Company-owned BESS: 2,763 MW

Company-owned BESS + Solar: 350 MW (BESS capacity only)

Natural gas PPAs: 1,195 MW

TVA is the nation's first utility to submit a construction permit application for a small modular reactor (SMR) to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. GE Hitachi’s BWRX-300 will be deployed at TVA's Clinch River site near Oak Ridge, TN. Preliminary SMR site preparation could begin as soon as 2026. Careful planning is required to preserve the endangered mussel population.
