EQ Research is hiring a Regulatory Services Associate.
This role contributes to EQ Research’s document filing support services for client regulatory filings with state agencies, which includes the preparation and ex*****on of compliance documents, as well as supports EQ Research’s policy subscription services and consulting research and projects. Strong attention to detail is a must. This is a full-time position and usually aligns with standard business hours, but the work schedule for this position will vary.

Location: Remote with headquarters in Cary, NC.

Salary: $50,000 to $60,000 per year with benefits.

Primary Qualification Requirement: Bachelor’s Degree, Paralegal Certificate, or Associate Degree.

Why? From 2019 through Q3 2025, CCA customers paid an average of:
⚡ 16.4% MORE for electricity
🔥 37.5% MORE for gas

Important context: New York CCAs are not full-service retail providers like California CCAs, where CCA generation rates can be lower than utility generation rates.

In North Carolina, Dominion proposed a $37 million (11.98%) increase in its annual non-fuel revenue requirement. If approved, a residential customer using 1,000 kWh/month would see their bill increase by $17.14 per month (12.76%) from $134.34 to $151.48.

Nationally, lawmakers in several states, including Arizona, Indiana, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania, are taking efforts to block rate increases proposed by utilities, as AI data center demands continue to drive up prices.

The artificial intelligence boom is leading to fights in some states over growing utility profits. Governors, attorneys general and others are protesting rising electricity bills and say cash-strapped residents are stuck in a broken system.

Duke Energy's recent ROE request in North Carolina is the third-highest ROE request among all recent rate cases filed across the country. Duke would earn $713 million from its NC utilities and increase ratepayer costs by $64 million above its current ROE.

The results of Georgia Power's 2029-2031 All-Source RFP are out. Although battery energy storage systems (BESS) and solar were selected, all of these proposals are company-owned. The only PPAs are for natural gas resources. Of the 8 GW in resources selected by Georgia Power, here is the breakout:

Company-owned natural gas plants: 3,692 MW

Company-owned BESS: 2,763 MW

Company-owned BESS + Solar: 350 MW (BESS capacity only)

Natural gas PPAs: 1,195 MW

TVA is the nation's first utility to submit a construction permit application for a small modular reactor (SMR) to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. GE Hitachi’s BWRX-300 will be deployed at TVA's Clinch River site near Oak Ridge, TN. Preliminary SMR site preparation could begin as soon as 2026. Careful planning is required to preserve the endangered mussel population.

NC's budget bill allows utilities to recover power plant construction costs for plants that may not even be built and removes the 2030 interim target of a 70% reduction from 2005 levels, retaining only the 2050 carbon neutrality goal.
