Think back on the moment when you first learned how to ride a bike, climb a tree, or drive a car.

Because you didn't know how to do any of these things, you approached the experience with awe and wonder.

You were engaged in each adventure with rapt curiosity. Unfortunately, research informs that curiosity begins dwindling around age 5 and is replaced by preconceived notions and, later, past experiences, which leads to a life that's stale and routine toward approaching problems or situations.

Fortunately, there is an alternative. "Shoshin," the Zen Buddhist word for "beginner's mind," allows us to look at every situation in which we find ourselves as if it's the first time we're seeing or experiencing it.

It allows us to be open to possibilities and potentialities versus simply deferring to our preconceptions or our "expertise."

The distinction between “reacting” and “responding” appears to be subtle or, merely, semantics, but there is a significant difference between how each shows up in our lives.

The former relates to physical or psychological threat, which takes the form of “baggage,” such as fear of failure, fear of not being accepted, fear of the unknown, and the like.

The latter allows us to think deliberately and helps guide our behavioral responses to situations in which we find ourselves.

Learning how to manage this difference helps you level-up your mindset to achieve peak performance in life and relationships.

In 1985, the band, Fleetwood Mac, released a song entitled, “Jumping at Shadows,” which is a song about feelings of insignificance and regret of a life not lived to the fullest.

But when we focus on those things, when we jump at shadows, we risk not living a joyful, fulfilled life.

Fortunately, there is a systematic approach that allows you to level-up your mindset and achieve your greatest desires and make your dreams come true.

The question is: What risks are you willing to take?

Research informs us that we have ~60-70k thoughts per day and 80% of those thoughts are negative and 95% of them are repetitive.

Those data points are quite sobering to consider and it’s no wonder how people can let their thoughts take them captive.

Fortunately, there are ways to take back control, but you need to be willing to interrogate your thoughts.

Ask yourself...

To what end are your thoughts adding productive value to your life?

How is your external environment contributing to negative thought patterns?

How can I appreciate more of the things that bring joy to my life instead of emphasizing what you lack?

Answers to these questions allow you to level-up your mindset by taking your thoughts captive so you can achieve peak performance in all areas of your life.

It is important to acknowledge that it can be detrimental to relationships when we find ourselves in our own drama or the drama of others.

If you find yourself experiencing a great deal of drama with little-to-no resolution, you’re probably stuck in The Drama Triangle.

This model describes the connection between personal responsibility and power in conflicts and the shifting, and potentially destructive, roles people play.

Fortunately, there are ways to level-up your mindset to bring about better, more helpful outcomes with your significant other, your friends, and at work.

It’s time to get unstuck.

I recently had the privilege of being a guest on the Beyond the Rut Podcast, hosted by Jerry Dugan.

During the conversation, we discussed...

Being motivated by external validation is a common issue in the modern world.

It is normal for us to seek acceptance and love from those around us during our childhood, teenage years, and young adulthood.

As we enter into middle age, however, it is essential that we strive to attain our own internal validation.

The key here is to focus on doing things well and being able to be proud of our efforts, not just relying on recognition from others.

By making this shift, we level-up our mindset and can free ourselves from doubts and achieve peak performance.

When we think of fitness, most people think of “physical fitness.”

We all know that eating right, engaging in regular physical activity, getting enough sleep, and managing stress are important.

The health and quality of your relationships, however, are, arguably, equally as important.

This relates to the idea of “social fitness,” which relates to how we build and optimize our relationships and interactions with others.

This is especially relevant with the ongoing mental health crisis, particularly with teenagers.

This episode explores practical ways to build your social fitness “muscles.”

It is inherently problematic and can lead to mental and physical issues, such as depression, loss of interest in life, and feelings of worthlessness.
