🔧 Through-Hull Fittings & Valves
Always ensure your through-hull fittings are sealed tight. Just as importantly, any seacocks or valves that aren't being used on a regular basis should be kept in the closed position. This simple preventative step stops unexpected water intrusion and keeps your vessel secure.

💧 Bilge Pumps & Float Switches
Your bilge pump is your absolute first line of defense, but it’s only as reliable as its float switch. Make it a habit to physically test your float switches on a regular basis. Lift them up to ensure they engage the pump immediately when water levels rise. Don't wait for a high-water emergency to find out a switch is stuck or a wire has corroded!

🚨 Safety Tip of the Week: Don't get caught with expired flares!

If you are heading offshore, you know that carrying U.S. Coast Guard-approved visual distress signals isn't just a good idea—it's the law. But simply having a flare kit on the boat isn't enough to guarantee your safety or pass an inspection.
Here is what you need to check before leaving the dock:

🔥 The 42-Month Rule: Pyrotechnic flares expire exactly 42 months from their date of manufacture. Check the stamp on every single flare. If they are past that date, they no longer count toward your Coast Guard requirement.

🔥 The Magic Number: You must have a minimum of three unexpired day/night flares on board. (Pro tip: You can keep your recently expired flares on board as backups, but they must be stored separately from your unexpired primary set).

🔥 Storage & Accessibility: Are your flares dry, in a high-visibility waterproof container, and easy to grab in a panic?

🔥 Modern Alternatives: Tired of replacing flares every few years? Consider investing in a USCG-approved electronic visual distress signal (e-flare) accompanied by a distress flag for day use.

⚓ Safety first, captains! When was the last time you truly inspected your safety gear?

Before you cast off on your next trip, it is crucial to check your life jackets and throwable devices. The U.S. Coast Guard requires one properly sized, USCG-approved life jacket for every person on board—plus one Type IV throwable device for vessels 16 feet and over.

But simply having them on the boat isn't enough to pass a Coast Guard inspection (or keep your crew safe in an emergency).
Make sure your gear passes this quick checklist:

✅ Condition is Everything: Inspect the fabric for rips, tears, dry rot, or severe fading. Test all hardware—make sure zippers zip smoothly and buckles click securely.

✅ Check the Fit: Ensure you have the correct sizes for your current crew, especially children. A loose life jacket won't work properly in the water.

✅ Verify the Labels: The USCG approval label must be legible. If it’s worn off, the jacket is technically no longer compliant.

✅ Accessibility: Life jackets must be readily accessible—not buried under towels, locked in a tight compartment, or still in their original plastic packaging.

Whether you're cruising the harbor or heading offshore, here is what needs to be on your checklist:
The Primary Anchor & Line: Inspect your rode—both the chain and the line—for chafing, fraying, or weak links. Make sure your shackles are seized properly and the bitter end is securely fastened.
The Emergency Backup: A primary anchor isn't enough when conditions change fast or if you lose power. Always ensure you have a fully rigged secondary anchor onboard. It needs to be easily accessible, perfectly maintained, and have enough dedicated line to deploy at a moment's notice in an emergency.
