Opening Day in Illinois!
October 1, 2015, the only opening-day buck I’ve ever taken, and looking back, probably one of the more important bucks in my development as a hunter.
I debated even hunting him that morning. But colder-than-normal temperatures showed up, the wind I needed was there, and I decided to roll the dice. I slipped into a pre-set stand that had been hung for that exact situation, based on the history I had built with this buck.
As luck would have it, I caught him coming through on his way back to bed. One well-placed arrow later, I watched him tumble into a log jam within sight of the stand.
What makes this buck special is that he was the first one I killed based on accumulated history and specifically targeting an individual deer.
Earlier that summer, I had invited my friends Bob Bob Mitchell and Lee Mitchell Lee Mitchell over to fish and have supper. When they pulled up, I was shooting my bow in the yard. As we talked, Lee was telling his dad about him. I pointed toward the area where that stand was located and said, “Give me any east wind the first four days of season, and I’ll get him over there.”
Youthful confidence and enthusiasm? Probably a little bit of both.
But in this one instance, it came true.
That buck helped reinforce something I’ve carried with me ever since: build the history, know the buck, prepare the setup ahead of time, and when the right conditions finally line up, don’t be afraid to make your move.
Happy Opening Day, Illinois. Good luck and be safe out there.
