MEMORY MONDAYS:
ALZHEIMER'S affects the senses and the inability to express emotions and react to physical environments that are unfamiliar.

VISUAL IMPAIRMENT: Glare, Peripheral, Contrast Sensitivity and Depth Perception are the most common deficits seen with Alzheimer's Disease.

Time of day combined with lighting can create shapes and glare on floors will look slippery and cause hesitation to enter rooms or walk on floor. Sometimes it will cause them to want to clean it up or pick up things that aren't there to you and me.

Peripheral vision is the deficit that will most likely get you hit. Their ability to see things from the side, either looking forward or down causes startling effects if you don't approach from the front. They don't see from the bottom which causes trip hazards if there are low end tables or clutter.

Contrast Sensitivity causes objects of the same color to be difficult to see like a white toilet seat in an all-white bathroom change to a colored seat or driving at night can also be difficult.

Depth Perception makes judging how far objects are including navigating steps which may create off-balance and increased falls, 3-D objects and flat surfaces especially going from a light-colored tiled surface to dark-stained wood floor. Items that are flat on page may also be attempted to be picked up.
