Sometimes the road really does have bumps.

In late summer, while on vacation with my husband, I was in a biking accident that left me with a broken knee and the need for surgery. It was painful, frustrating, and honestly, depressing at times. As someone who’s used to moving fast, leading teams, and staying active, being forced to stop was incredibly difficult.

But in those quiet moments, between doctors’ visits, physical therapy, and learning how to navigate life on crutches, I found myself reflecting on how this accident parallels life and leadership.

Both personally and professionally, we all hit bumps in the road. Sometimes they’re small setbacks; other times, they throw us completely off course. We don’t plan for them, and we certainly don’t welcome them. But how we respond to them defines us.

I’ve been reminded that growth and progress don’t always move in a straight line. Getting “back on the bike”, literally and figuratively, takes patience, humility, and resilience.

So if you’re facing a detour, whether in your career, your goals, or your life, know that it’s okay to pause, regroup, and then keep going. The path forward may look different than you planned, but it’s still yours to ride.

And for the record... Things are easier with a loyal heart curled up beside you.

Micro-Coaching & On-Demand Support

Not every leader needs a 6-month engagement to unlock growth.
Sometimes it’s a 30-minute session, focused on one challenge, that sparks the biggest change. That’s why micro-coaching is on the rise.

If you had just 20 minutes with a coach, what would you want to work on?

Lesson learned: Big breakthroughs often come from small shifts. Leaders can integrate micro-coaching into their routines by scheduling short check-ins with a coach, mentor, or even a peer. Over time, these quick, targeted sessions compound into significant growth. The key is consistency, think of micro-coaching as a leadership “fitness routine” rather than a one-time event.

DEI and Inclusive Leadership

The most impactful leaders today are not just inclusive, they’re actively shaping cultures where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.
Executive coaching now often focuses on uncovering bias, building cultural intelligence, and creating equity in decision-making.

What’s one way you’ve seen inclusive leadership make a real difference?

Lesson learned: Inclusion requires deliberate practice. Leaders should regularly audit their own decision-making process, who’s invited to the table, who gets the final say, and who’s missing from the conversation. Inclusive leadership isn’t about being perfect; it’s about being aware and making intentional adjustments to ensure all voices are heard and valued.

Emotional Intelligence, Resilience & Well-being

Resilient leaders don’t just push harder, they know when to pause, reset, and come back stronger.

Executive coaching is increasingly weaving in mindfulness, stress management, and emotional intelligence as non-negotiable leadership skills.

How do you protect your energy so you can lead sustainably?

Lesson learned: Burnout is not a badge of honor; it’s a warning signal. Leaders who prioritize their well-being not only last longer but inspire greater loyalty from their teams. Incorporate daily resets, whether it’s a 5-minute breathing exercise, journaling, or simply walking away from your desk.

Resilient leadership is not about enduring stress but about recovering quickly and returning with clarity.

Hybrid & Flexible Coaching Models

Leadership development no longer fits into one format.

Today’s best programs blend in-person connection, virtual coaching, and even VR immersion. Leaders want accessibility and depth, and hybrid models deliver both.
What works best for you: face-to-face, virtual, or a mix of both?

Lesson learned: The “best” format isn’t about preference, it’s about purpose. Use in-person sessions for building trust and relationships, virtual for ongoing accountability, and immersive tools like VR for practicing complex scenarios in a safe environment. The most effective leaders build their development journey the way they would build a strategy, using the right tool at the right time.

AI & Data-Driven Coaching

AI is transforming executive coaching, from real-time behavioral feedback to AI-powered role plays.

But here’s the catch: technology can amplify leadership, not replace it.
The future belongs to leaders who know how to combine human empathy with AI-driven insights to grow faster and smarter.

Would you trust an AI to coach you through your next leadership challenge?

Lesson learned: AI can sharpen awareness, but it cannot replace accountability. Leaders should use AI insights as a mirror, to see blind spots in communication, tone, or decision-making, and then work with a coach or mentor to translate those insights into meaningful behavioral change. Technology is powerful, but transformation only happens when a human commits to act differently.

Character-Driven Leadership

Strong leadership isn’t just about strategy or results, it starts with character.
In a world where skills shift rapidly, values like honesty, empathy, and resilience remain timeless. Leaders who ground decisions in character create trust that lasts far beyond any one project or market trend.

How are you intentionally cultivating character in your leadership?

Lesson learned: Character is not a “soft skill”; it’s a core competency. Leaders should treat it like any other area of growth by intentionally practicing it. Try this: identify 3 values that matter most to you, then ask a trusted peer or coach to give you feedback on whether your daily decisions reflect those values.

Building trust starts with aligning actions to principles, consistently.

It’s that time of year again, first-day-of-school season.

For many parents, it’s a bittersweet milestone: walking children to the bus stop, snapping those “first day” photos or sending them off to college with a mix of excitement, pride, and maybe a few nerves.

What strikes me every year is how much this moment mirrors the corporate world.

Preparation matters. Just as students need the right supplies, schedule, and mindset, professionals thrive when equipped with the tools and clarity they need to succeed.

Guidance is key. Teachers and Professors shape the learning journey, but so do leaders in the workplace. The best leaders, like the best educators, balance structure with encouragement.

Growth comes from stepping forward. Whether it’s a child walking into a college class for the first time or a professional stepping into a new role, progress requires courage and trust in what lies ahead.

As leaders, we should remember that every team member has their own “first day of school” moments. Our role is to create an environment where curiosity is encouraged, mistakes are treated as part of the learning process, and growth is celebrated.

This season is a reminder: leadership is less about directing and more about preparing, supporting, and believing in people as they take their next big step.

Compete Outside. Collaborate Inside

“Competition can unite teams, bringing them to work together—efficiently—against a common external adversary. Internal competition, however, may do the opposite, making teams less effective, leading to silos, secrecy, and backstabbing.”

Lesson learned: Healthy competition fuels innovation, when it's aimed outward. But when leaders pit teams or individuals against each other internally, collaboration breaks down and trust erodes.
Great leaders align teams against shared goals, not each other. Unity wins. Silos don’t.

Every August, I pause to quietly celebrate a personal and professional milestone: the founding of Ashlin Associates in August 2007. This month marks 18 years.

18 may not be a “headline” anniversary like 15 or 20, but to me, it’s extraordinary.

That’s 18 years of working alongside my incredible clients.
18 years of learning from you.
18 years of the privilege of helping you grow and succeed.

Along the way: three published books, thousands of client conversations, countless miles of travel to meet you, more than 30 exceptional staff and colleagues, and three loyal canine partners who’ve been my daily cheerleaders.

Thank you for trusting me, challenging me, and inspiring me. And thank you, August, for the reminder each year of how far we’ve come.
