Sometimes the road really does have bumps.
In late summer, while on vacation with my husband, I was in a biking accident that left me with a broken knee and the need for surgery. It was painful, frustrating, and honestly, depressing at times. As someone who’s used to moving fast, leading teams, and staying active, being forced to stop was incredibly difficult.
But in those quiet moments, between doctors’ visits, physical therapy, and learning how to navigate life on crutches, I found myself reflecting on how this accident parallels life and leadership.
Both personally and professionally, we all hit bumps in the road. Sometimes they’re small setbacks; other times, they throw us completely off course. We don’t plan for them, and we certainly don’t welcome them. But how we respond to them defines us.
I’ve been reminded that growth and progress don’t always move in a straight line. Getting “back on the bike”, literally and figuratively, takes patience, humility, and resilience.
So if you’re facing a detour, whether in your career, your goals, or your life, know that it’s okay to pause, regroup, and then keep going. The path forward may look different than you planned, but it’s still yours to ride.
And for the record... Things are easier with a loyal heart curled up beside you.
