On this final day of Black History Month for 2022, we celebrate the phenomenal Gordon Parks.

There is perhaps no individual who embodies the power of photography more than photographer, poet, musician, storyteller, activist - Gordon Roger Alexander Buchanan Parks.

Beginning in fashion photography with Vogue, Parks’ work delivered vivid and visceral messages shown through some of his most important photo essays, such as those on Harlem gangs, segregation in the South, his own experiences with racism; on Flavio da Silva, a poor child living in Brazil; and on Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Black Panthers.

Parks's photography was only one among many talents; he was also an accomplished musician, composer, poet, novelist, and filmmaker, whose films include Shaft and Leadbelly.

Find time to walk through his work including the cinematic photos that captured the injustices of the civil rights era.

Today in Black History we recognize the incredible and courageous Bessie Coleman.

Bessie Coleman soared across the sky as the first Black American, and the first Native American, woman pilot. Known for performing flying tricks, Coleman’s nicknames were; “Brave Bessie,” “Queen Bess,” and “The Only Race Aviatrix in the World.”

Born in crushing poverty, “Sweet Mama Stringbean,” escaped to Baltimore and began a life as a slender and glamorous blues singer on the southern vaudeville circuit. Her technical and emotional agility quickly made her one of the major stars of the Harlem Renaissance era.

Ethel Waters made history, making many “firsts.” She was the first Black woman to appear on radio; the first Black woman to star on her own at the Palace Theater in New York; the first Black woman to star in a commercial among many others.

Ethel was the first singer to confront racism in a popular song (“Suppertime”) in 1933, the same year she introduced “Stormy Weather” at the Cotton Club. Waters was the first Black woman to receive equal billing with white stars on Broadway. In Hollywood she would also become the first Black woman to establish herself as a major American dramatic actress and only the second African-American to be nominated for an Academy Award – for her supporting role in the film “Pinky” (1949).

She achieved it. No regrets.

We are almost at the end of Black History Month. So today we continue celebrating by commemorating Dorothy Irene Height.

Dorothy Height is recognized as one of the most influential women in the modern civil rights movement.

An award winning orator, Height is credited with being the first person in the movement to view the problems of equality for women and equality for Blacks as a whole, merging issues that had been historically separate.

At the age of twenty-five she joined the National Council of Negro Women. She was appointed president in 1957 and led for 40 years.

In 1974, she was named to the National Council for the Protection of Human Subjects of Biomedical and Behavioral Research, which published The Belmont Report, a response to the infamous Tuskegee Syphilis Study. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1994, and the Congressional Gold Medal in 2004 for her civil rights activism.

A powerful influence indeed.
