A Moment With Me: The Watermelon Seed
Today I had a moment.
I found myself thinking about the importance of guarding my thoughts—not just the thoughts that come to mind, but what I do with them once they arrive. Do I entertain them? Do I dismiss them? Do I allow them to linger? Do I act on them emotionally? Or do I take them captive before they take root?
As I sat with that thought, an image came to mind.
You know how during the summer, when everyone is gathered outside eating watermelon, people will casually toss the seeds into the yard? Nobody thinks much about it. They're just seeds. Tiny, insignificant, easily overlooked. They get stepped on, forgotten about, and left where they fall.
Then the rain comes.
The soil softens.
Time passes.
And before you know it, something begins to grow.
That's how thoughts can be.
Not every thought that enters our minds belongs there. Some thoughts are random. Some are distractions. Some are fear-filled. Some are rooted in comparison, offense, doubt, pride, anxiety, or temptation. They arrive unexpectedly, and if we're not careful, we can treat them the same way we treat those watermelon seeds—casually tossing them aside without realizing they've landed in fertile soil.
The enemy understands the power of a seed.
He knows that if a thought remains unattended long enough, it can take root. What begins as a passing thought can eventually become a mindset. A mindset can become a habit. A habit can become a stronghold.
The scary part is that growth often happens unnoticed.
While we're busy with life, distracted by responsibilities, consumed by schedules, and pulled in a hundred different directions, those seeds can quietly settle deeper into the soil of our hearts and minds.
That's why we must stay vigilant.
When we're disconnected from God, neglecting prayer, neglecting His Word, neglecting worship, or simply drifting from intentional communion with Him, we become more vulnerable to the things that don't belong in our soil.
The Bible warns us about vain imaginations and teaches us to take every thought captive. Why? Because God understands something we often forget:
Everything that grows begins as a seed.
Every action.
Every attitude.
Every belief.
Every habit.
Every decision.
It all starts somewhere.
So today, I want to leave you with a question:
What's being planted in your soil?
What thoughts have you allowed to remain?
What conversations are you watering?
What influences are shaping your heart?
What are you nurturing mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and physically?
Because not every seed deserves to grow.
Some things need to be uprooted before they become part of the landscape.
And while there are things that others can do to support us, there are some responsibilities that belong to us alone. We are responsible for tending the garden God has entrusted to us.
So be mindful of the seeds.
Guard your soil.
Protect your heart.
And whatever you do, don't become a random watermelon seed.
