Quiet quitting has made its way into dental hygiene and it does not look the way you think it does.

It is not a hygienist who stops showing up. It is the one who keeps showing up but has quietly stopped bringing her best. The one who used to bring ideas to the table and now just does her job. The team that used to have energy in the morning huddle and now moves through it like a formality. The hygienist who cares deeply about their patients but has quietly stopped going the extra mile because they’re running on empty.

This is not a character issue. It is not a motivation issue. It is what happens when talented hardworking people are not being poured into. When the work becomes repetitive. When there is no clear standard to aspire to. When nobody is investing in their growth or acknowledging what they are contributing.

This is one of the most common things our coaches walk into and it is also one of the most transformable.

When a hygiene team has the right systems, a clear standard of care, a doctor who is genuinely invested in their growth and a coach who helps them see what they are capable of everything shifts. The energy comes back. The initiative comes back. The sense of purpose that brought them into this profession in the first place comes back.

Rachel spent time at the Dental Leadership Summit in Austin alongside some of the most forward thinking dental leaders in the country. One of the most important things a dental leader can do has nothing to do with business strategy or business strategy.

It is creating an environment where your team feels safe enough to tell you the truth.

If the people on your team cannot bring you a hard conversation, you will never actually know what is happening in your practice. You will only ever see the version of things people think you want to see and that is a dangerous place to lead from.

Psychological safety is not a soft concept. It is a leadership requirement and building it takes intentional, consistent effort.

The hardest part of leadership is not making the decisions. It is being willing to hear things that challenge how you see yourself and your practice and staying open enough to let them land.

The practices that grow are almost always the ones where the leader has done this work. Where the team trusts that honesty is welcomed. Where hard conversations are not avoided but invited.

That is the kind of culture we help practices build.
