As business owners it can be difficult to figure out our place in the discussion of race and determine constructive, meaningful ways to help. Here's a great article I recently received from Kevin D. Monaghan, Director/Founder Intuitive Compensation Group that gives concrete actions business owners and leaders can take in their businesses and communities to make a real difference.

In a climate that’s threatening the livelihoods of black people and black professionals in corporate America nationwide, here’s how business leaders can step up to provide support and take necessary action.

I love how challenge breeds innovation. This platform for companies to "lend" furloughed employees to other companies was developed in a matter of weeks in response to COVID-19. That's Leadership!

Downside - this platform only accepts large companies with 100+ employees available or 100+ jobs to fill. How can small businesses emulate this and/or learn from it?

They built People + Work Connect, which links companies cutting jobs with ones that are hiring

Big companies have Boards of Directors with broad experience and expertise to help manage them through a crisis. They pay those directors a LOT of money for that access. Small businesses can't usually afford that. But they should have a group of advisers who act like a board which includes their financial people (CPA, bookkeeper, financial adviser), insurance agent, HR advisor, attorney and business coach among others, who business owners can lean on in these uncertain times.

If you have are missing any of these advisers - or you are not confident that you can lean on them if you do - then I suggest you reach out to your network and start adding them.

My current role as a business coach and formerly as a business attorney has been to put these teams together for my clients. I have a pretty deep pool of potential advisers to refer. Don't hesitate to reach out if you need a referral or advice on what to look for in an adviser for your business.

There are areas that boards and their chairs should prioritize when guiding their organizations through unprecedented uncertainty.

All the business advisers out there (including yours truly) are talking about the need for companies to "pivot" their business models temporarily and perhaps permanently in response to COVID-19. While informational articles and videos are great resources, it can be daunting for business owners to undertake this process on their own.

If you need help figuring out where to start and what to do that's where a business coach can help. I've been working with my clients over the last month+ to help them determine how to navigate this landscape, deal with the challenges and take advantage of new opportunities.

Whether it's just a quick call to get a second opinion or your business needs more extensive help, please don't hesitate to reach out. We'll get through this together.
