When a biopharma company reduces its workforce, what happens to the scientific work that remains?

We looked at selected 2026 workforce announcements to understand what sits behind the headline numbers, from narrower pipelines and changing R&D priorities to shifts in how specialized scientific capabilities are supported.

Across Clinical Pharmacology, Pharmacometrics, DMPK, QSP, Bioanalysis, and related functions, the announcements offer a broader view of how scientific teams are evolving as companies adjust their portfolios and organizational structures.

See what we found in our latest blog: https://www.haallc.com/2026/09/17/biopharma-layoffs-2026-scientific-teams/

What do biopharma layoffs in 2026 mean for scientific teams? We examine how workforce changes are reshaping specialized R&D capabilities.

09/09/2026

Biopharma layoffs aren’t just a headcount story.

When pipeline priorities change, companies also have to rethink how they access specialized scientific capabilities.

Across Clinical Pharmacology, Pharmacometrics, DMPK, QSP and Bioanalysis, workforce decisions can affect which expertise stays internal, is shared across teams, or is accessed externally.

The bigger question isn't only “How many people were affected?”

It’s “Which capabilities does the organization still need, and how will it access them?”

That may tell us more about where biopharma is heading than the layoff numbers alone.

What is the Pharmacometrics hiring market telling us in 2026? 📊

We took a closer look at the Pharmacometrics roles we’ve tracked in the first half of this year to see where demand is emerging, which capabilities are appearing most often, and how expectations are changing across different levels of the market.

See what these trends could mean for hiring.

Across the Pharmacometrics roles we’ve been reviewing, one pattern has been particularly consistent.

Strong modeling expertise remains the foundation, but the scope often becomes considerably broader at more experienced levels.

Population PK/PD and exposure-response remain central. Beyond these foundations, we’re also seeing experience with model-based meta-analysis, disease progression modeling, time-to-event analysis, and clinical trial simulation, depending on the development question.

At the same time, more experienced roles frequently extend into dose optimization, regulatory strategy, and translating quantitative findings into broader development decisions.

It also highlights how varied experienced Pharmacometrics backgrounds can be across the market.

Two candidates may both have strong Pharmacometrics backgrounds, but the depth of their modeling experience, the questions they have applied it to, and their ability to connect those findings to development decisions can be quite different.

We’ve been taking a closer look at these patterns across the 2026 Pharmacometrics talent market.

More on what we’re seeing soon.

Are remote scientific roles becoming harder to find in biopharma?

Remote opportunities haven’t disappeared. But across the Clinical Pharmacology positions we tracked, structured hybrid models are increasingly visible, with some employers requiring approximately 2–3 days onsite per week.

For Clinical Pharmacology professionals, geography is becoming relevant again, even in a discipline where much of the work can be performed remotely.

For employers, work-model requirements can directly impact the size and reach of the available talent pool.

As we move through the second half of 2026, one of the things we’ll be interested to follow is how the changes taking place across biopharma begin to show up in the talent market.

The first half of the year brought some encouraging signals. Venture investment strengthened, M&A activity increased, the IPO market became more active, and reported restructuring activity eased compared with the same period last year.

What happens from here may be just as interesting.

Across the areas we follow most closely, Clinical Pharmacology, Pharmacometrics, DMPK, QSP, Bioanalysis, and related quantitative and translational sciences, we continue to see that hiring activity can tell a more nuanced story than the broader market headlines.

Sometimes that shows up in the types of roles entering the market. Other times, it can be seen in how responsibilities are evolving, where specialized experience is being sought, or which scientific capabilities appear around advancing development programs.

These are often gradual shifts, and they may look different from one organization to another.

That’s part of what makes this period particularly interesting to follow.

As the broader biopharma environment continues to evolve, we’ll keep watching how these specialized talent markets develop through the remainder of 2026 and sharing some of the patterns we find interesting along the way.

For those working across biopharma, what changes have stood out to you so far this year?

Our latest Q2 2026 Biopharma Market Update looks at the forces shaping the market, from renewed venture investment and M&A activity to easing layoffs and the continued importance of specialized scientific talent.

We also explore what these shifts may mean across Clinical Pharmacology, Pharmacometrics, DMPK, QSP, Bioanalysis, and related quantitative and translational sciences, where hiring dynamics continue to follow their own patterns.

One thing we've been noticing as we've tracked the biopharma market this year is that investment activity and hiring aren't moving at the same pace.

There's certainly been a lot of positive momentum across the industry. Venture funding has picked up, M&A activity remains active, and the IPO market has continued to reopen. At the same time, many large pharmaceutical companies are still restructuring, while clinical-stage biotech organizations continue investing in pipeline growth.

What we've found interesting is where hiring has remained the most consistent.

Across Clinical Pharmacology, Pharmacometrics, DMPK, QSP, and Bioanalysis, demand has stayed relatively resilient compared with the broader market. These are functions that sit at the intersection of translational science and development strategy, making them difficult to put on hold, and often even harder to hire for when demand returns.

We've also noticed that much of this hiring continues to come from clinical-stage biotech. In our own 2026 market tracking, roughly 60% of the Clinical Pharmacology leadership opportunities we identified came from biotechnology companies.

It's an interesting reminder that while the overall market may be improving, hiring doesn't always recover in the same way across every function.

Some areas rebound quickly. Others remain highly competitive because the talent has always been limited.

It'll be interesting to see how this continues to evolve as more companies move programs through development.

Have you been seeing similar hiring patterns within your organization or across the industry?
