October is Women’s Small Business Month, and we’re taking a moment to recognize the women who decided to build something of their own.

Not because they had endless time, unlimited resources, or every answer figured out.

Many started while working another job. Raising families. Caring for people they love. Managing responsibilities that didn’t disappear just because they had a business idea.

And still, they made room for the idea.

Some are building businesses they hope will eventually replace a paycheck. Some are creating another stream of income. Some are building something they want to leave behind. And some simply decided there was a better way to use what they know, what they’ve experienced, and what they do well.

However you got here, and whatever stage you're in, your business deserves the opportunity to become what you imagined it could be.

This month, we celebrate the women doing the work, figuring it out, changing their minds, starting over when necessary, and continuing to build.

September asked us to look at the money side of business a little differently.

We talked about facing the numbers instead of avoiding them, recognizing the personal money habits we bring into entrepreneurship, defining what financial success means for our own businesses, and understanding that funding is a tool rather than proof that we have made it.

Now we move forward.

Because once you understand what you are building, what it costs, what it needs, and who it is meant to serve, there is another question waiting:
Do the right people know you exist?

There is something about this time of year that naturally feels like a shift. The year isn't over, but we're far enough into it to see what has worked, what has changed, and what may need a little more attention before we close it out.

For business owners, that can mean looking at the things we've built quietly behind the scenes and deciding what we're ready to bring forward.

No rush. No pressure to suddenly do everything before the end of the year. Just another month to keep building, adjusting, and making decisions that feel right for the business you're creating.

Funding is one of the first things entrepreneurs start thinking about, but sometimes we move too quickly into grants, loans, investors, or business credit before we fully understand what the business actually needs.
What does it cost to provide your product or service well?
What needs to happen now, and what can wait?
What are you funding: the foundation, the growth, the aesthetics, the infrastructure, or all of the above?

Try not to answer this one with another number.

Instead, think about what you believe the money will give you.

More security?

The ability to leave your job?

A consistent salary?

Help running the business?

More time?

Less anxiety?

Freedom to make choices without money being the first consideration?

There is nothing wrong with having a revenue goal. But knowing what the money is supposed to do gives the number meaning.

This weekend, ask yourself:

What does “enough” look like for the stage my business is in right now?

And while you are thinking about what comes next, do not forget to acknowledge what you have already built.

One of the easiest things to do in business is look at someone else’s success and decide that is where we should be too.

But we usually do not know the full story behind the number.

We do not know how much time they had to invest, what they sacrificed, who helped them, how much money went back into the business, or what was happening behind the scenes while they were building.

Still, we borrow the finish line.

Success does not happen all at once. It happens in stages.

Sometimes success is simply launching the thing you have been talking about for years. Sometimes it is breaking even. Sometimes it is finally paying yourself consistently. Sometimes it is hiring someone so everything no longer depends on you.

Your next milestone does not have to look impressive to anyone else.

It just has to mean something to you.

We say we want to make more money, but sometimes money is not really the thing we are asking for.

Maybe we want more breathing room. Maybe we want to stop worrying about every unexpected expense. Maybe we want the ability to pay ourselves consistently, hire help, spend more time with our families, or simply have more control over our lives.

The number matters, but so does what we expect that number to change.

And somewhere along the way, many entrepreneurs start measuring themselves against revenue goals that came from someone else’s business, someone else’s timeline, or something they saw online.

Be honest with yourself about this one.

When money comes into the business, do you immediately think about what you can do with it personally? Do you want to hold onto every dollar because you are afraid it will not come back? Do you start thinking about the next thing you can buy for the business before asking whether you actually need it?

None of those answers automatically makes you “bad with money.”

But your first instinct can tell you a lot about the relationship you have with it.

This weekend, do not try to fix anything. Just notice the pattern.

Then ask yourself one more question:

Is this what the business needs me to do with the money, or is this what I am used to doing with money?

That distinction matters.

There is a difference between recognizing a financial habit and actually changing it.

You can know that you spend too quickly when money comes in. You can know that you avoid looking at your numbers. You can know that you have trouble reinvesting in the business or separating what the business earns from what you personally can spend.

And still do it.

Changing how we relate to money can take time because the issue usually did not start with the business.

That is why financial clarity needs more than good intentions. Sometimes you need a system that helps you see what is happening before emotion takes over.
