💡 CAN vs. SHOULD: Leadership Requires a Different Question
There are very few things in life that we simply can’t do.
You’re grown.
You’re educated.
You’re experienced.
You’ve earned the title.
You have the authority.
You have the access.
So yes… you CAN. ✅
But leadership requires us to ask a different question:
🤔 SHOULD I?
And I think sometimes we spend entirely too much time focused on the CAN and not nearly enough time considering the SHOULD.
💭 Can I say it?
Absolutely. But should you?
💭 Can I make that decision?
Probably. But should you?
💭 Can I respond that way?
Sure. But should you?
💭 Can I use my title, authority, experience, or position to move a certain way?
You may very well be able to.
But again… SHOULD YOU?
Because CAN speaks to ability.
SHOULD speaks to responsibility. 🎯
“Should” makes us consider more than ourselves.
👥 Who else is affected by this decision?
📍 What is the immediate impact?
🔮 What could the future impact be?
🌱 What am I creating with this decision?
⚖️ Is this simply something I have the authority to do—or is it actually the right thing to do?
That’s the difference.
Sometimes CAN is ego.
But SHOULD requires leadership.
Leadership isn't about exercising every ounce of authority available to us simply because we have it. It's having the wisdom, discipline, and emotional intelligence to recognize that having the ability to do something does not automatically make doing it the right decision.
And sometimes the greatest demonstration of leadership is restraint.
It is knowing:
I can—but I won't.
Not because I'm incapable.
Not because I'm afraid.
Not because someone stopped me.
But because I considered the people, the environment, the consequences, and the lasting impact—and determined that I shouldn't. 💡
So before the next decision, response, reaction, email, conversation, or move, ask yourself two questions:
Can I?
Probably.
Should I?
Now that's the leadership question. 🎯
